Question! I have picked up something that causes a spam popup window
to open when I close my MSIE. My popup blocker or ZoneAlarm does not
catch it. I have cleared my cache, cookies and it still comes up. I
can do a "properties" check on it and the url shows but I can't find
it within any files on my puter to give me a clue as to what to
delete. Anyone have an idea what I picked up and a general route I can
take to rid myself of it?

Thanks for any help you might send my way.

I find it useful. You can use it as a prevention measure after you find
whatever it is that causing you problems.

Thanks for the info. I will certainly investigate the links you
recommend as soon as I can lick the current PopUp problem. My PopUp
blocker isn't doing it. ZoneAlarm won't touch it and Adaware hasn't
made a difference. Not sure what it's going to take but I'm going to
rid myself of this gremlin one way or the other. Thanks for the
helping hand.

If you're on a NT based O/S such as Win 2K or XP, then you may have to
*Kill the Messenger Service* that can be exploited as well to send pop-
ups.

You may want to hit the machine with the full trial version of MooSoft as
well, as it could be an AD Trojan of some kind undetected.

Maybe, Trend Micro House Call will find something.

You can use Active Ports and Process Explorer to help you track it down
and both are free.

Of course, Google is your friend to find the how-to or a download. :)

Thanks folks for your help but I'm no closer then when I started. I am
still getting this blasted Ad PopUp as soon as I close MSIE. I have
ZoneAlarm installed and running. I ran Ad-Aware as well as Spybot
Search and Destroy and while they found many offending files they did
not find the source of my current problem. In addition I ran Highjack
This. No cigar. I'm about ready to live with the blasted PopUp until
my next puter or my next occasion to format and reload. I thank all of
you fine folks for the response, help and support you have offered,
especially Duane Arnold, Dave Hodgins and MJD. Your support is very
much appreciated.

Have you any new tool bars in IE? Have you tried the Google Toolbar,
that's a great 1 for stopping popup's, but this really sounds like it's
a pop under, not when you close IE, more likely when you open IE. Did
you analyze the Hijack this file yourself or did someone else analyze
it. Is the ad the same or different. Have you or another program
modified settings in IE? It's something you don't have to live with,
but more detail than I get a pop up when I close IE really is needed.

Just a thought try pest patrol I've been testing it for about 2 weeks seems
to be working very well

The whole problem started when I followed a link to a sight that was
suppose to be trusted. When opened I immediately got several PopUp's
in spite of my Earthlink PopUp blocker that was active as well as
ZoneAlarm. After that I have been able to use my MSIE with no PopUp
problem. It's when I close MSIE that the PopUp appears. It's always
the same display and in the properties, list the same URL address. I
have not altered any of the MSIE settings nor do they appear to have
been changed although this I'm not 100% certain of. When I open
Netscape I never get the PopUp which leads me to believe that the
problem is closely associated with MSIE. I looked over the Highjack
log and did not see anything that showed any relevance to the
properties URL that I see associated with the PopUp ad. I have not had
any one look over the log which would probably be a good idea but I
don't know of anyone who I could lean on to do so. I would be happy to
post it if any one would be willing to look it over and give me their
opinion. That's about as much info as I can relate concerning this
problem. Any advice and/or help is mucho appreciated.

Maybe it is time for details. What site did you visit?

Ok, what is that URL, the one in the popup window? What is the text in
the window?

Since IE is such a known security problem, why not just drop it in
favor of a modern browser? You mention Netscape (which is itself
getting old). Try Mozilla or Firefox. Install either, with a new profile.

Bingo! Big Will gave me access to the magic bullet called
housecall.trendmicro.com . Ran this and found 18 infected files that I
deleted and now all is well with the world. At least for today. I'm
ashamed to admit that I had let my anti virus software lapse and
failed to have the proper protection so important in this day and
time. This was a wake up call that I will heed. What's the general
consensus on what and which anti virus software is the best? Norton
and McAfee are the best known but are they really the best?

Big Will and all of you good folks who rushed to my rescue I sincerely
thank you for your help. Please accept my gratitude.

Well,.. consider that not one tool will ever do all the cleaning &
protecting,.. not yet today... so various options exist... and many of
them are freeware...

There is no general consensus, but since Trend just dug you out of the
hole, maybe you should give their PcCillin a look .. imo it's no worse
than most of the others, and better than some.

Not to be picky about this, I do believe I mentioned House Call off the top

GSV;
Good point on the PcCillin. I will certainly look it over.

Duane;
I had so much being thrown at me from all different directions that I
probably failed to keep up with who told me what. If I missed thanking
you for your help and assistance then please excuse and know how
grateful I am to you and all that stepped up to offer their expertise
and helping hand. I would have never figured out what to do without
the knowledge and experience of those of you who helped me sort this
out.

Thanks again to all for your help.
