I am looking for a way of using Excel to create population
trees. These are common ways to show population
distributions by age and gender. They are essentially bar
charts, with age groups on the vertical axis, with one set
of bars for male and one for female.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Convert the numbers for one gender to negative numbers. Now, plot the
data for the two genders as two separate series in the same chart. The
gender with negative numbers will be to the left of the y-axis, the
other to the right. Format to suit, especially the Overlap value
(double-click any plotted series, then select the Options tab in the
resulting dialog box).
