POP3 E-mail checking freeware

Is there any method of verifying the trustworthiness of
POP3 e-mail checking software?

There are oodles of freeware programs that claim to check
POP3 e-mail accounts, but they could easily provide a
means for unscrupulous people to gather sensitive
information...

Has anyone found a program they trust and whose
trustworthiness is verifiable?

i use:

http://www.mozilla.org 's verion of thunderbird.

it looks just like outlook, minus all the cr@p that
microsot puts in to thier lousy products.
