POP3 completely broken in Outlook

All of a sudden my Outlook stopped working with POP3 accounts. I did
some reading. Microsoft people of cause blaimed anitviruses, firewalls,
adviced to install SP2 for XP and such. Nothing of that applied to me -
i have XP SP2, no active antivirus (i manually do scan 1/week), no
firewall (i think NAT router is enough of a protection), I am current
on updates.

Outlook reported server timeout errors:
0x8004210A - POP during Receiving
0x8004210B - SMTP during Sending

I did try Thunderbird on this machine and yes, everything works. So -
"Server administrator" or "ISP" ar not to blame.
There is nothing suspicious in EventLog.
I tried "Detect and Repair" - didn't help.

Last time it happened (half a year ago) - it was some update (KB9211...
- I forgot) which i had to uninstall. I tried to uninstall several
updates now - didn't help. Besides, that time it happened to all my
machines, and now to one only.

Any help is appreciated - i am looking for an answer for one of two
questions:

1. Is it possible to fix Outlook?
2. Does anybody know of a good alternative? Thunderbird is good mail
client, but lacks calendar and it's adress book is way too limited (not
even a birthday!). OpenOffice?

And your version of Outlook would be?
Do things work for you in Outlook Safe Mode?

If you're using Office 2003, have you applied SP1? Also, what is your polling
interval for send/receive email? Are you running Norton Internet Security? If
you are, stop scanning incoming and outgoing mail (this won't compromise your
security).

It is Outlook 2003 + SP2

Safe mode makes no difference. Actually, let me explain all errors i
see.
1. Start Outlook (safe mode or not). SOMETIMES error dialog shows up.
Text: "The procedure entry point CreateInfoWindow cannot be located in
MSOERT2.dll" Screen shot:
http://www.problemov.net/images/OutlookSafeError0.PNG If this happens
on startup, then it is repeated every time Send/Receive is executed
(and for every account) until i exit Outlook. I see no pattern as to
when this happens.
2. ALWAYS all accounts report receiving error 0x8007007F (Unknown
error). Screen shot:
http://www.problemov.net/images/OutlookSafeError1.PNG
3. ALWAYS for all POP3 account i receive 0x8004210A/B errors

It is Outlook 2003 (11.8010.8036) SP2
Polling interval - default - 5min, server timeout - 60 sec, 3 servers
No Norton Internet Security, no antiviruses, no firewalls - nothing
like that

Change your polling frequency to 10 minutes to see if that helps. Polling
more frequently than 10 minutes can be a factor in causing timeouts.

Hi,
Im the system administrator on a small office, we are having the same
problem with 2 Computers, same errors and descriptions.
Im already uninstalled all updates, installed again later, remove antivirus,
detect and repair, reinstallation, remove/install outlook express, etc,
NOTHING works,
Only thing I didnt try is, uninstall Outlook , and Install Again, because is
working with out exchange server, and has many many many settings, and
accounts .
so if you have any news LMK.
best regards
Ezequiel

Reinstalling doesn't reset any settings just program files. If you want to
be really safe just do the reinstall logged in as a different user ;-)

Reinstalling might not be the solution as it is an OE dll. Try;
Start-> Run; regsvr32 msoert2.dll

Have you tried to recreate this problem by creating a brand new Outlook
profile? I have found that a lot of "mysterious" problems went away by
simply recreating the Outlook profile. I would recommend not deleting
the current one, just creating an additional one with a different name.

hi there,

have recently fallen victim to exact same problem, albeit i'm also
getting error 0x8007007f as well as 0x8004210a.

did we find a reliable fix to this yet ..?

cheers ..

ps no-one seemed to fancy replying to my own message here .. x-(((

just discovered - uninstalling KB920214 seems to fix this issue (at
least for me ;-).

cheers ..!

Had the same problem. Actually a problem with Outlook Express.
Try unistalling and reinstalling Outlook Express. That worked for me.

Also had the same problem. Appearantly the problem is with Outlook
Express. So uninstalling and re-installing Outlook Express worked for
me.

It seems to come back when I shutdown my PC and restart it the next day.

alex.mcarthur - you are my hero!

It worked! I thought it was not updates, because last time (half year
ago) updates broke my outlook, it was on both machines simultaneously,
and now on one only. Conclusion: KB920214 breaks Outlook POP3
functionality.

Damn - i am thinking of turning updates off completely, or switch to
Linux altogether. I already learned how to go around in Thunderbird -
not bad.
- Managing multiple personalities is good.
- Rules seem to be more convenient then in Outlook
- Adaptive spam filter - very good.

I didn't switch to Thunderbird for 2 reasons
- Calendar / tasks / appointments with reminders, etc.
- More advanced address book (more fields, like birthdays, and
integration with calendar)

When (and i am sure this is 'when', and not 'if') this will be added to
Thunderbird, or some other OpenSource client, i am dumping Outlook for
good...

--- To some other poster - yes, i don't have antivirus/firewall
running. I do scan my machines weekly though, and i never got any
viruses in 6+ years. So, 'NAT router + some common sense' is good
enough protection. Or maybe i am just lucky.
