in OE my POP3 setting for incoming mail is being set to 127.0.0.1 every time
I log off. I can reset it manually when I want to download mail and it
retians this setting until I shut down the computer. No viruses are being
reported by MacAfee. Is ther a setting that I am missing?

This question has been asked and answered so many times it's not funny,
so next time you want to ask a question see if it's already been asked.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your antivirus program.

Hi Dave,
Check your McAfee Privacy service you will find Mcafee doing this to protect
you from Spoof E-mails and attack and assign the POP there.
HTH.
Please let us know.

McAfee's email scanning is causing the problem. Disable it. It provides no
additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

Dear Mr Zieglar,

It is inappropriate to comment as you have. If your time is so precious that
you feel slighted by my inexperience on this Discussion Group why waste it by
typing so many characters - you could have ignored my question.

many thanks for your suggestion though I will follow it up.

David

I have another idea: Why don't you learn how to use newsgroups? You will
gain greater benefit, and when you ask a question you'll be less likely
to be ignored.

When you join a conversation of friends or co-workers do you immediately
barge in with your comments, or do you first listen for where the
conversation has been and is going? We are asking for the same courtesy.
