I am in exactly the same boat.
I also have been getting the pop ups and I, too, have the
services disabled. I am also using Comcast with a cable
modem. Sometimes I get as many as 20 or 30 pop ups.

HELP!!!

I found it!!

Go down a bit further in the postings and you'll see the
answer. I'll copy it below....the mistake I made was
that I did NOT click the 'STOP' button after disabling it.

"To get rid of these pop ups, you'll need to disable
the "Messenger Service", click Start,
then Run, enter "services.msc" and click OK. Scroll down
to "Messenger", select it,
right-click and then choose Properties. Under startup
type, choose 'Disabled' and then
choose the 'Stop' button. After the service is stopped,
click OK. Nothing in Windows or any
real third-party applications should be effected by this."

I think what you are all experiencing is hackers or
advertisers using an open port where Messenger Service
keeps open to tell you important info from Microsoft.

To stop this from happening, install a firewall. Software
or hardware. There is a very good, free, world-known
software from www.zonelabs.com called ZONEALARM.

Activate that and your pop-ups from MESSENGER SERVICE will
stop. Except for real ones from Microsoft, which are
important, hence sometimes not a good idea to STOP this
service directly, as you indicated.
