I have a broadband connection and even when I do not have
internet explorer open the pop-ups fly onto the screen
and interfere with the programmes that are been used at
that time. Help this is really starting to drive me
mad.............

Are the popups browser popups, i.e. from IE (pun intended), or Windows
messages?

For IE popups I've been happy with the new Google toolbar (free):
http://toolbar.google.com/index-beta.php

I've never had browser popups if IE was closed, but I've got a firewall
device (see below). If your popups are IE popups, and if someone is able to
launch the browser on your machine, then you likely have bigger problems
than IE popups :-).

For Windows popups: to test this, find out your external IP address, then
type:
net send <IP Address> "testing 1, 2, 3"

If the message gets thru, then your firewall (or lack thereof) allows these
popups thru.

In my case, net send 192.168.0.123 (my internal IP address) "foo bar" allows
the msg thru, but net send <external IP address> "foo bar" gets blocked at
my ADSL router/firewall.

You may want to investigate Internet Connection Firewall in WXP or get a
firewall device to go between your ADSL/cable modem and your computer.

Hope this helps,
Scott
