When running a slide show, is it possible to show a pop-up when clicking on one of the bulletted items? this pop-up would have additional information to support the bullet subject.

Yes. With PowerPoint 2002 or 2003, this can easily be achieved with
triggers. There is an article on my site about how to do just what you want
at URL:

If you want to do this in an earlier version, you will need to fake the
effect by linking to an identical slide with the pop-up added and then
linking back.
