Ever since I installed my latest Norton version, my pop-ups are no longer
being blocked. I contacted them about it, and apparently they've removed
that feature from their product, but said that my IE settings and either
Google or Yahoo toolbar should take care of it. Well, it's not.....I have
both my IE privacy setting and Google toolbar setting set to block popups,
but they are still coming through. Anyone know how I might correct this
situation?

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Windows version? IE version?

What Norton application did you install? Did you uninstall the previous
application *and* run the Norton Removal Tool *before* installing the new
version?

Sorry about that. Yes, I uninstalled Norton....don't think I ran the
removal tool.
Installed version is Norton Internet Security 2008.
Windows XP Pro; IE6

Hi Bob,
There is an Add-Ons an extra feature for Norton new products from NIS2007
and later version. it is an optional feature free for paid customers with the
prevoius Products.
Norton Add-on Pack:
http://www.symantec.com/norton/products/overview.jsp?pcid=is&pvid=naop1

I hope you run the Liveupdate engine and got the latest definitions, then
run a full/Comprehensive Check and see what NIS will find and after the
add-ons if the pop-ups will cease to pop bob!.
HTH.
nass

Actually, they've take that out of their 2008 version. If I hadn't already
purchased a 6-user license for 2008 I would just go back.

Bob
If you gone to the link I given to you you will find three Radio buttons one
of them NIS 2008 check this and click on the BIG button for downlaod, it is
an optional, you need to download it and install it!.

Thing is.....I already have the Add-on pack installed for 2008, and that
feature is not/no longer in it. Granted,.it was for for 2007, but from what
I can see, it no longer is and Norton verified that for me yesterday.
Here's what they said, and it seems to be true.

"For the issue regarding Pop-Ups and Ads, please note that Pop-up and Ad
Blocking is no longer available in Norton Internet Security 2008 or in its
Add-on pack.

We decided to discontinue our pop-up ad blocking functions in the Norton
Add-on Pack because today's browser toolbars, such as those offered by Yahoo
and Google, provide very good pop-up ad blocking solutions. If you need
pop-up ad blocking you can easily visit the Yahoo or Google web sites to
download their respective tool bars at no charge".

Now, if what they are saying were true, that would be nice.

Or, are you saying you have this add-on pack installed with 2008 and it
"does" have the ad and pop-up blocking features? I did go to the link, but
it doesn't look to me like it has the feature. Again, I "do" have it
installed.

1. After making certain you have a copy of your NIS 2008 Product Key, (a)
disable or uninstall all Norton Add-ons (important!) then (b) uninstall NIS
2008 via Add/Remove Programs.

2. Enable the Windows Firewall.

3. Run this removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

4. Reinstall NIS 2008.

5. Manually update NAV, reboot into Safe Mode, run a full system scan, then
reboot into normal (Windows) mode.

6. Make sure IE7's Pop-up Blocker is enabled: Tools > Pop-up Blocker > ...

If unwanted pop-ups persist, what do these pop-ups say? Caution: Do NOT
click on ANY links in these unwanted pop-ups!

Give an example web page where the popups are not being blocked. They
may not be popups at all but CSS used to make a floating frame *look*
like a popup. IE's popup blocker is weak. If you visit
www.popuptest.com, few popup types are blocked. Google's Toolbar will
block more types of popups. 3rd party popup blockers, like PopupCop
will block even more but you can configure "irritiation levels" to
decide just what you do and do not want blocked.

CNN.com is one example. The advertisements on that page used to be blocked,
but now come through. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Google toolbar, and
now it's not blocking anything, where it used to. Just seems that all of a
sudden none of the ads are being blocked any more--on ANY of the computers
in my house. Same scenario on all of them--basically, ever since I
installed Norton Internet Security 2008.

I thought you were asking about popups. Now you are talking about ads
in the web page. Blocking popups does not get rid of ads.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the Google toolbar, and now it's not

The Google Toolbar never did block ads. It blocked some popups.

Norton is a brand, not a product name. Norton Internet Security Suite
had an ad-blocking feature based on URL strings. Maybe that is what
they removed. That blocked ads, not popups. Google's Toolbar blocks
popups, not ads. So now you have to find something that blocks
*advertisements*.

Are you saying the "ads" are displayed in popups at www.cnn.com? I
don't get any popups when I visit that page (and PopUpCop is not
reporting that it has blocked popups at that page although maybe the
URL blocking of ads that I have in IE7Pro is preventing me seeing
whatever you see).

Sorry about only referring to it as "Norton". I guess I thought you had
seen the other posts in this string. At any rate, yes it is Norton Internet
Security 2008, but they have removed that feature from this latest version.
Everything was fine before they did that. Also sorry about mis-naming
it....yes, I guess it is acutally "ads" and not pop-ups that are the
problem. I guess I'll have to try one of the other products out there for
controlling this particular problem. Thanks.

I'm currently using IE7Pro. It comes with some pre-defined URL blocks
(plus there are other types of blocks but I haven't used them). I
have also added my own URL substrings on which to block ads, like for
doubleclick, atdmt, and several other advertising services.
