You can block ads with a HOSTS file: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
And with a popup stopper: http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree.html

If you suspect that something has been downloaded to your machine without your
consent and may be or will be damaging:

Spyware Help!

Removal Tool, your choice, novice users, Lavasoft's Ad-aware,
http://ftp.pcworld.com/pub/new/privacy___security/aaw6181.exe
Lavasoft/Ad-aware home: http://www.lavasoftusa.com
Mirror site: http://www.lavasoft.de/

Advanced users, SpyBot Search & Destroy,
http://studserver.uni-dortmund.de/~su1669/spybotsd12.exe

SpyBot home: http://security.kolla.de/
SpyBot How-To: http://www.tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/

Install either but both are not necessary, reboot, read FAQ and overview, use
online update feature to obtain the latest reference files, scan for Spyware
much like you would with your pre-installed anti-virus scanner.
Rid your machine of unwanted Spyware pests.

Hi:

Just curious. Why do you believe that AdAware is for the novice user, while
Spybot Search & Destroy is meant for the more advanced user? Won't they both
accomplish the same thing?

I am not trying to start a flame. I'd really like to know.

Thanks.

By the way, I am using version 6 of AdAware, and like it.

Hi back, I don't bite - no worries :-)

Ad-aware has an easy interface that is typical for a novice user that *just*
wants Spyware removed and that's it.
SpyBot has a much more difficult interface that has a learning curve, it
accomplishes much the same thing but in a more advanced fashion.

Us Spyware guys like to run both since one acts as a fall back to the other.

Read these pages and you may want to run SpyBot as well:

Glad you've got a good attitude. Sometimes I word things incorrectly, and
then someone is all over me! ;>)

Anyway, thanks very much for your response, and for the referenced websites.
I'll check them out.

Regards.

Siljaline,
I thought you could not install both adware & spybot
Don't they conflict with each other?

Greg P Rozelle

Hi Greg,

Negative - I highly recommend you run both regularly.

Add Mike Burgess' HOSTS file and AdShield and you're *cooking with gas*.
HOSTS, http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
Mike's AdShield block list - http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/block.zip

AdShield freeware, http://www.fsd1.org/technology/download.asp At version 1.2.
