I visited one web site, closed the browser, and 5 minutes later would
get several IE windows pop up on the screen. I'd close them and 5
minutes the windows would reappear. Turns out the a-home web site had
opened an instance of IE but without a window. You coule see an
instance if iexplore.exe in Task Manager but there was no window for it.
Killing that ghost copy of iexplore.exe in Task Manager eliminate the
problem. There are lots of tricks that can be played on visitors using
scripts, ghost copies of the browser, ActiveX controls, and browser
helper objects (BHOs). I use PopUp Cop not only to get rid of popups
but also to disable script timers, meta refresh, flash movies, and lots
of other tricks. To see what BHOs might be infecting your system, get
PC Magazine's BHO Cop or do a Google search for BHOdemon. Not all BHOs
are nasty; for example, the Acrobat Reader runs as a BHO, and so does
Norton's Anti-Virus.

Have you heard of Ad-aware and Spybot for eradicating spyware?
