william

a window pops up around every ten minutes or so that says
reminder at the top and says page cannot be displayed
The only way i can close it is to hit control alt delete
but the menu also looks different only has one tab that
shows what is currently in use.

I would suggest you also download Adaware (free version)
at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/. It detects and safely
removes dataminers, tracking cookies, dialers and other
objects from your computer than can sometimes be the
source of other types of popups (not "Messenger
Service"). Make sure you use "webupdate" before you scan
to make sure you have the latest ref file since they are
updated frequently.

Greetings --

Sounds like a remnant of some shareware or evaluation software
that you tried and subsequently removed. Since you can use Task
Manager to close it, you know the application's name. Simply use
MSConfig to show you where the command starting this program is
originating, so that you can permanently eliminate the source of your
irritation. Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the system registry, primarily
in the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.
