Pop-up blocker and manage add-ons

I'm running a SBS2003 server with IE 6.0.3790 and I think I used to have both
pop-up blocker and manage add-ons. But lately my server has started to act
strangely and explorer.exe and shell32.dll is making problems... Along with
this I think these 2 mentioned tool options went missing from my Internet
Explorer.. So now when sitting on the console using Internet I get all these
comercial pop-ups al the time..
Anyone have any ideas?
I have used MS spyware and other tools to check for browserspyware and used
3 different antivirus apps but to no use..

Thanks

I have been looking thru all the posts here and been checking registry values
and policy setting but I cannot seem to find anything that relates to my
problem or the values are not set.

No policies are set to restrict these tools so where did they go?

Would appreciate some help.
Thanks

With such a vague symptom description you could be looking
at windows messenger "popups". Try disabling Windows Messenger?

I aint running messenger on the server.

And a vague description.. What can I write more than these two options under
"tools" have disappeared. I don't know where they went...

Thanks

Well I have checked that document already but these keys doesn't exist in my
config.. I have HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft but no
policies for IE..

Should I add them and see?

I have been looking thru all policies I can come to think of from the
policyeditor but can't see that there even is an option to delete these menus.

Thanks

No need to add that key/value. I don't have that build / OS in any of my
systems, so unable to test it. May be someone here or in the Server groups
should be able to assist better.

Sorry, I overlooked that part. However, I wasn't even aware that that OS
had those features. I thought they were new with XPsp2 and only available
on it.

OIC. "SBS2003 server with IE 6.0.3790" == WS2003sp1?

(MSN search for
"pop-up blocker" "windows server 2003 service pack 1" site:microsoft.comsite:microsoft.com
)

Hmm... do you use "Internet Explorer hardening"?

<quote>
As a result, many of the security enhancements included in the latest release
of Internet Explorer will not be as noticeable in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1

Well, I have been looking thru 20 different articles about IE hardening and I
managed to find out that I was running the server with hardening, but I
disabled it and IE still looks the same.. ( I changed a registry setting from
1 to 0)

However, when I was fooling around with some setting under Security settings
in "internet options", more options under the Tool menu disappeared. I have
an app called "RoboForm" installed and that app used to have some options
under the Tools menu but they all disappeared now as well when I changed
something.. Don't know what I did to make them disappear and no matter how I
change the settings I can seem to get them back..

As far I can see there are no GP settings that turns these features off
either... So I'm totally lost here... I read a whitepaper about IE's enhanced
security config but I don't get any more enligthened by it...

I don't know what that would be but I can imagine that a single switch
might only signify something is to be used in future rather than alter
current settings.

Does your OS have an IE Repair? (Ref. KB194177)
or perhaps at least have module setupwbv.dll present?

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Doing that might shake up the bits while recognizing the new option bit.

BTW notice that a boot is required to effect the repair phase;
so you may have to schedule that test.

Does your OS iexplore.exe support XPsp2's /rereg command-line option?

Using it might be a more acceptable first try because it doesn't
try to force a boot, though I'm not sure if it tries to put anything
into the registry as Pending...

BTW if you want to try the latter there may be some typos in the
[IEReRegSection] (or whatever the equivalent is on your system):
E.g. I found the following errors on mine (mostly to do with whether
there is a DllRegisterServer entry point or just a DllInstall entry point
in each of the following modules:

%11%\comctl32.dll,NI
%11%\digest.dll,NI
%11%\inetcpl.cpl,NI (I deleted the first and left this.)
;%11%\msapsspc.dll (I actually deleted this line.)

Making those four changes allowed the whole section to execute cleanly.

However, when I was fooling around with some setting under Security settings
in "internet options", more options under the Tool menu disappeared.

<LOL> Sclerotic security!

Good luck

OK, so.. I even tried to uninstall hardening via add/remove programs but
still no change. I reinstalled a 3rd party program that used to be under the
Tools menu and at least I got that option back..

I tried checking in add/remove for IE but there is no such option. Also if I
check the Internet Explorer folder on my computer there is no SETUP.EXE
file...

I tried running rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance but it says that
setupwbv.dll is missing...

If I try to run the rereg command with IE it only opensup a IE window with
http:///rereg in the address bar...

Well... I'm not sure what to do more... and think I'll just install a 3rd
party pop-up blocker instead..

Thanks

Evidently not, then.

We're not done yet. Take that fixed section of ieuinit.inf
(whatever it's called) and point advpack.dll at it.
E.g. if the section is called IE.Repair.ReRegister Run...

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\System32\ieuinit.inf,IE.Repair.ReRegister

Since this stuff used to be done during the boot while nothing else
was running my preference is to try to reduce other activity as much
as possible before doing it. Also, I don't know if any of it tries to
schedule other bits of themselves to be done only during the next
boot but I think it doesn't hurt to do one after it's done just in case.

Good luck
