Eric

I realized I had been neglecting my microsoft updates and
recently did all I could find. To my dismay I now recieve
2 to 3 security alert pop-ups per hour through messenger
service. I have gone as far as deleting my msn messenger
service and still am recieving the pop-ups all of which
originate from a pop-up killer company. I didn't have
these before and would like to be free of them again!!

the popups are not a function of MSN messanger, but of the
messanger servers (aka winpopup in 98), to disable this go
to your services (administrator tools -> services ) and
disable the service messanger. or select it as manual but
i disable it.. unless you are in a office enviorment where
the network administrator sents popups to allert uses of
network statuse it is a useless service.. even if you can
live with the popups it is best to disable it because i
heard a rumor that viruses could spread though
messanger... i havent looked into that although

i hope this helps

Hi Eric

Windows messenger Service is the culprit of that spam. Get a firewall that
blocks these open ports and disable the messenger Service if wanted.

In order to stop Messenger spam you should block these ports with your
firewall:

TCP ports 135, 139, and 445
UDP ports 135, 137, and 138

---> You can get free firewalls here:

http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?lid=zadb_zadown

http://www.agnitum.com/download/

In order to have more featurs you should buy the 'Pro' Versions though.

You might as well want to take a look at the following MS KB-Articles:

- "Messenger Service of Windows":

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;168893

- "Messenger Service Window That Contains an Internet Advertisement
Appears":

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;330904

Blocking the Messenger Service within your Operating System:

Windows NT/2000/XP

1. Click on the Start button and open the Settings/Control Panel folder.
2. Open the Administrative Tools folder, and double click on Services.
3. Scroll down to Messenger and double click on it.
4. Select "Startup type: Disabled" and click the "Stop" button to stop the
service.
5. Click "Apply, and then "OK".

Hope this helps. Regards,

Fabio

I've been experiencing the same thing - I kill the popup
with alt-F4 but now some strange stuff is starting. W2000
actually hung & I had to turn off power - shades of W98!!
Everything is OK until I start Outlook Express then my
system just ginds to a halt.

Anybody had this - how'd you fix it?
