matt

i get these ads telling me my computer has open ports
that leave my computer open to hackers and advertising.
then it says i can get rid of thes if i go to different
websites to buy software to stop this. this seems new, i
havent heard much about it yet.

I tried blocking Inbound NetBIOS (NetBIOS over TCP/IP) and
UDP broadcast traffic as suggested in this article, with
Norton Personal Firewall, but it didn't make any
difference.
Anyone come across any other suggestions ?

Thanks...

you can disable the messanger by going to start/control
panel/administrative tools/services/messenger.
right click the messenger... goto properties then under
the general tab there's a part that says "startup
type" ....pick the disable option ....thats it ...no more
messenger pop ups

This is all very good and well, but what if you actually use Messenger? Is the only way to stop the newest bane of the Internet to completely disable Messenger?
And tell me please Mr. Microsoft - While you are plugging the holes left in XP that hackers are using to vandalize us - WHY HAVEN'T YOU PLUGGED THIS HOLE IN MESSENGER YET???
Or was it left there intentionally to give the scum of the earth an easy way to promote their garbage?

Greetings,

Keep in mind that this does not disable MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger in any way -- this
only disables the Messenger Service on Windows (which is something completely different from
the other 'Messenger' applications).
