Hi. I installed PS, and now I'm getting a notice from Microsoft that
there's spyware on my computer. I thought PS didn't have spyware. Does
it or doesn't it? Is PS safe?

Why would Microsoft know if there was spyware on your system? Did you
try one of the more reliable spyware detection/removal applications?

Hmmmm....sounds like you're getting one of those stupid pop up messages the
spammers use. Maybe PS isn't working?

Yeah, I'll bet he's getting messenger spam and just doesn't realize
what it is. Just go to www.grc.com and get "Shoot The Messenger" and
that should cure it. Most pop-up software isn't designed for those
type messages.

Yeah. I agree. It solves the problem.

How to prevent your computer from displaying Windows Messenger messages

Windows XP

Click Start->Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools
Double click Services
Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

I'm still on the ancient Windows 95 system. Do your instructions
pertain to it as well?

No. Windows Messenger only exists on 32 bit operating systems. Your
problem sounded just like it, but apparently that's not the case.

A firewall will stop them as well. Doesn't everyone have a firewall?

No not everyone but they should nowadays. I believe that the people that
tell people to "Just dissable Messenger Service" are either very stupid or
just want people to have a false sense of security to keep their systems
wide open on the now very malicious Internet.

What makes you think that people who disable their messenger service
don't have a firewall?

You overlooked the word 'just' in the post you were replying to. Yes,
disabling messenger (and other bloatware services) is a neat thing to do
(as long as your UPS doesn't use it to tell you the battery is flat),
but =JUST= disabling Messenger is an Ostrich trick.
