Poor Resolution

I am making a movie using still photos which I have scanned to my hard drive.
They look great in the preview screen and as slideshows, but when I preview
on my LCD monitor they are fuzzy. I have made several other movies with an
older computer and had excellent results. This new media center computer with
a 320 gig hard drive should be able to do better than this! Can anyone
explain why this is happening? Thanks!

What settings are you using to save the project?
DV-AVI is best for video but High Quality NTSC/PAL is best for images.

I'm simply saving the project as I go, in My Videos, on my hard drive. I
thought the settings you mention were only available when I'm ready to finish
the project. Please explain how I would do this in the preliminary stages. I
would appreciate your explaining this to me in my detail. Thanks!

Well now I am confused.
You said they look great in the preview screen but are fuzzy on your LCD
monitor.
What exactly are you doing?

You can save the project to a DV-AVI or High Quality NTSC anytime you want
to test
to see if things are going the way you want, I do it regularly with larger
projects, just as
you would when you are done with the project.

1. PRess CTRL+P to open the "Save Movie Wizard"
2. Give the movie a name and choose the save location. Click NEXT.
3. Click the radio button next to "Other Settings" (If you don't see that
option click "Show more choices...")
4. Click the drop down box and choose what settings you want to use. Click
NEXT.
5. Your movie will save as specified.
Now you can view it with your Media Player to see if the results are what
you want.

As I said you can do this, and I recommend doing so with larger projects,
anytime during the design
process that you want using whatever settings you want.

If you do this and the images are still "fuzzy" let us know and we'll look
into the problem a little more

I shouldn't say that this didn't answer my question, but I'm still having
problems. I need to explain what I mean by the pictures looking great in the
preview screen but fuzzy on my monitor. I check as I go along, by clicking on
the box with the diagonal up arrow at the bottom of the preview screen. This
opens it to my monitor and I can watch it and quickly make changes. I did
this all the time on my old screen and everything was perfect. I frequently
just saved by clicking on the save icon, too, because it often froze up.

I just tried doing as you suggested, which is what I have always waited to
do when I finished the project, and it takes several minutes to save, but the
resolution is still fuzzy. Even the title frames are out of focus.

Is it possible that I have a bad copy of Movie Maker installed on this
computer?

As I said, when I simply use the same photos as a slide show they are clear.
On the preview screen, they are clear. On the monitor they are fuzzy.

I hesitate to continue with my project for fear it will look this way when I
burn it to a DVD.

I really do appreciate your help!

I definitely don't think it is an installation problem.

The preview being "fuzzy" wouldn't concern me too much but since you
rendered a video
and that too was "fuzzy" then there's a problem.

There are a few things I can think of at the moment.

One is that saving as DV-AVI is not the best thing to do when working with
only still images.
It is better to use HQ NTSC/PAL.

Another is that you have conflicting codecs. I don't expect that this is the
problem but it is
easy enough to check out simply by disabling all the codecs/filters listed
in
Tools -> Options -> [Compatibility] and trying the project then.

And one more is that the pictures are small or of a non-standard size so
when they are
viewed full screen they are "stretched" to a point of losing quality. This
is an area that
is more up Rehan's alley than mine so hopefully he will chime in with some
help here.

Once again, thanks for all your suggestions. I will try saving at the HQ
NTSC/PAL setting that you mentioned and disabling the codics.

However, I am using large, high-resultion photos and the results are the
same, so I don't think that could be the cause. I still don't understand why
they look great in a simple Windows slide show, though.

I will get back to you after I've tried the new settings.

Thanks!

WOJO, I just wanted you to know that I have just successfully completed my project. While the preview remained fuzzy, the movie which I saved at the default settings and burned to a DVD is crisp and clear. I guess I'll never know why this happens, but I can live with it as long as my final product is a good one. Thanks again for all your help!

Excellent, thanks for the update!
Getting a fuzzy picture in the preview window and then a clear end result is
not uncommon at all, in fact it is normal, but a fuzzy video getting
"cleared up" by your DVD Authoring software is certainly NOT typical.

I'm having the same problem. I am making a slideshow of high resolution
pictures (no video clips) and the quality of the pictures is very poor. I
did eveything that Wojo suggested, but when I watch it in Windows Media
Player the quality of the pictures is terrible. I want to be able to show
this on a big screen. Thanks.

Yes, I have installed "Photo Story 3" and have tried to work with it. But, I
must admit, I can't figure out how to work with it. I have imported all
slideshow pictures, but I can't find the place for selecting transitions,
adding text, etc. Under help, it says to go to "Narrate your pictures" but
the program doesn't give me that option. I only have the option to "Edit"
and can't find "Narrate your pictures." Thanks.

I figured out Photo Story 3, but it doesn't seem to have all the options of
Movie Maker and it won't save my project. I'll go find the Photo Story
discussion group....
