My HP laserjet 1000 is printing black all over the page. Do I just need to
replace the toner cartridge or is there something going wrong in the
finishing process?

Is the entire page completely black or is there a gray background over which
you can see the print?

The image is there, but dark gray heavy marks are obscuring the image....it
is very difficult to read.

"printing black all over the page" doesn't say anything.
What are you trying to print? Color or black? Photos, graphics or text???
Have you recently replaced cartridges with news ones?
Are you using brandname cartridges?

Are these marks actually vertical gray stripes? If they are then your toner
cartridge is likely to be the problem. To be sure, remove the cartridge, look
at the drum in the cartridge (the shiny cylinder), if the cylinder has gray
marks that correspond to the output then the cartridge is to blame.
