Well well

WinXPpro SP1, intel D845GERG2 mobo, Maxtor 6Y200P0 (200GB) drive in Mapower
enclosure (http://www.mapower.com.tw/map-h31.htm).

Trouble is I only get a 12 MB/s average read speed, for a theoretical
advertised maximum of 480 Mbps (~45 MB/s I assume).

Is this what I should expect ? Bad enclosure ? Cheap/too long USB cable ???

Any input greatly appreciated.

I think the enclosure makes a big difference when it comes to
performance. I have an older version of this one:
http://www.coolmaxusa.com/product/product_usb_list_02.html
(before they added support for drives over 200GB)

My performance is pretty poor compared to most external drives. I get
about 14MB/sec with USB2 and 12MB/sec with Firewire. It's got a 7200
RPM Maxtor in it.

I only use it for archiving and backups so I'm not overly concerned,
though.

Any enclosure suggestion ?
Not that I need speed, I also mostly use it for backups, but is 20 MB/sec
too much to ask ?

Those figures are pretty typical.

for a theoretical advertised maximum of 480 Mbps (~45 MB/s I assume).

You'll never get anything like that theoretical max.
Is this what I should expect ?
Yep.

Bad enclosure ?
Nope.

Cheap/too long USB cable ???
Nope.

Any input greatly appreciated.

Even snide remarks about your mother's behaviour ? |-)

Following your reasoning, I can put a 10 year old IDE drive in a USB 2
enclosure and it will miraculously speed up to 50 times its original transfer
rate.

I have a Seagate 120GB/8MB 7200.7 HDD mounted in one of these
doohickeys:

http://www.dealsonic.com/bymecoidetof.html

(ByteCC ME-320U2F USB 2/Firewire enclosure)

In USB mode it does about 20MB/s sustained, in firewire it pulls about
25MB/s sustained. Not earth shattering, but not too bad for portable
data vault purposes.

The Maxtor drive I specified is ATA-133 200GB.
What reasoning are you referring to exactly?
Read the question before answering.

Have a look at his (new) handle.

He could be excused though for thinking that you are not the brightest,
judging your (auto-linebroken) post.
