poor IE performance

My internet explorer takes up virtually all of my
computer's performance. When I type in a text box (say
yahoo email) I can type whole paragraphs without the
words displaying on the screen. Then, sometimes minutes
later, the words appear.

In windows task manager, the IEXPLORE.exe program causes
huge prolonged spikes in CPU usage.

I've already cleared cookies and temporary internet
files. It's not my computer b/c I have 512 MB of RAM.
I'm baffled. Any other tips you guys can offer?
