I've only been on the computer for less than a year so vista home premium is
the only pos that I've ever known. problems I've had include the Indeo audio
codec being on my computer preventing me from using windows dvd maker, I
still can't burn any files created with windows moviemaker in windows dvd
maker. I've had updates from microsoft preventing my computer from starting
up. I went through a period where I couldn't format any kind of discs. My
COM surrogate spent about a month or two crashing, my computer occasionally
crashes on startup. If I'm in sleepmode for any length of time over about 10
minutes it won't wake up and I have to turn it off and then on again. I went
through a period where everytime I tried to install a new program it would
tell me it was corrupted and I had to obtain a new copy. I've gotten a bad
update that wouldn't let me uninstall it. And in the category or "microsoft
or McAfee, take your pick" three different versions of McAfee spamkiller
cause internet explorer to crash occasionally. There might even be a problem
or two I've forgotten to mention.
I regularly scan or viruses and all that crap, I regularly use disk cleanup
and defragmenter and my computer is a dell and has a registry cleaner/fixer
that's from dell that I use regulary.
How much off all this crap is vista to blame for. having never used xp or
anything else I don't have anything to compare it to and how much crap have
you had to deal with? I'm getting ready to reboot my computer back to the
dell factory image for the second time already. Whats up with microsoft. My
computer is regularly telling that they are working on a solution to my
problem but i get the impression they're in jamaica working on their tan.

If there is any instance of an Intel Indeo codec on your computer, you or
Dell must have put it there. Vista does not have it..

The inability to format or burn could be down to faulty hardware. presumably
you have contacted Dell support about this..

There has been an issue with coming out of sleep mode. Sometimes it is slow
and sometimes it isn't.. take a look at this web page for more on maybe how
to work around this problem..
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-hybrid-sleep-mode/

McAfee and Norton products are known to kill installations and should not be
used. There are free versions of Anti-virus that do a really good job..
NOD32 is a good product if you feel up to paying for protection..

Problem solving takes time especially inter-company..

XP is a more mature product having been around longer, but XP still has its
issues

Frankly speaking, since Vista in this case is what's known as an OEM
version for Dell systems, then Dell *must* support it, not Microsoft,
while it's under warranty.
I have no idea what Dell has done to tweak Vista and can't really say
that the issues you posted are related to Dell or MS.

That doesn't mean it's not causing issues, does it ? There should be NO
need for a registry 'cleaner/fixer' at all. If there is, then Dell
should inform you *specifically* as to why. Have you inquired as to the
reason they included this 'feature' ?
Also, how often is disk defragmenter being run ? If you're not
continually installing/uninstalling software, then it should only be run
when DD recommends it.

I have seen Vista Home Premium on an Acer laptop that has had no issues
whatsoever, even with Norton Internet Security installed, too.
Uninstalling NIS did make the system much more responsive though.

I suspect McAfee *may* be the cause of some of the issues as you've
mentioned that different versions of it's 'spamkiller' has directly
caused issues with IE.

What Dell model is this, smokeyfish. [ BTW, is that smokey white fish or
salmon ? <w> ]

I have a new Dell with Vista Home Premium and haven't had any problems since
I got it 2 months ago. It instantly attached to the wireless network after I
entered the security code and found my network printer. I run AVAST virus
control with no compatibility issues. Sharing files with 3 other computers
was also very simple, after I learned about using permissions. I read about
all the problems people are having with Vista but I haven't experienced any
myself.

I just have issues in Vista Home Premium with Windows DVD maker, and in the
software just with windows in burning and reading cd's/and Dvd's! As
sometimes, when I pop in a blank cd it comes up saying to format it with the
live file, I do and this fails. Ruining the blank cd. Same with dvd's!
Other times it responds! Which I don't get.
I hoping The service pack 1 when it comes out for good, fixes this problem.
For now I installed the trial of nero (thinking of getting it if it's not
fixed within Vista) as it works, and doesn't come up asking you to format a
blank CD/DVD with live or mastered format. Also if I don't fill up the
discs, they still can be used there.

I've gotten a bad
update that wouldn't let me uninstall it.

I was working on a major project for Christmas. I have two color printers and a
black and white, none would work to print out the project. I could get neither
one to duplex or even print manually. It was a color project, so I only used
the black and white for testing purposes.

So, I updated my printer drivers. Big mistake. My computer went back to some
earlier version in many programs. It changed everything in it's appearance and
all my colors. But, worst of all, most of my files were not visible.

So, I uninstalled the update. I was back to my original predicament. I
changed the compatibility mode of the program (Print Shop) to XP and I could
then print out my job with the duplexor. However, the version of Print Shop
that I had was supposed to be Vista compatible. =)

I really wanted to use my color laser jet for the project. We never got it to
work properly. I have until next fall to figure it out. It's duplexing that
doesn't work. It prints the even numbered pages upside down.

This is not the first time that a MS update screwed up everything.

I have lots of Vista problems. Some of which I just haven't had time to figure
out. Some, I've found no solution or work-around, so I just accept them.

What is most frustrating is DH runs a shop of 200+ computers. But, none of them
have Vista. So, when he tries to help me, he often screws things up worse. LOL
He does not listen to me when I tell him not to try this or that. After the
printer driver update fiasco, he now listens to me. :)

He's the one that tried a creative way to install the update, after I told him
not to. When I looked over at my computer and saw the mess (he didn't recognize
it, because he's not so familiar with how my computer should appear), I about
died. I just yelled, "Stop, do not do anything. Do not turn off the computer.
Do not touch the computer until I can get over there!"

I showed Mr. Computer man that I knew a few things he did not know. <g>

We just undid his creative process and everything was back to "normal" [as
normal as you can be using Vista]. LOL

I have found the regular use of registry cleaners to cause all sorts of
strange problems because they usually "overclean" by deleting registry
entries that are needed in a way they aren't aware. ActiveX/Com entries are
almost always problematic if cleaned. I've had tons of things stop working
after running a reg cleaner. I use CCleaner mostly because I can tell it to
ignore entries like ActiveX/Com entries and not clean them but when I do run
it (not often as it has never really improved system performance) I check
all the entries it wants to clean first then and make sure I have a System
Restore point before the reg clean I can go back to if problems are found.

To clarify:
The Indeo codecs are on a default Vista system (iac25_32.ax) but used in a
special compatibility mode.

What breaks here is when third parties register these in their own fashion.
The only still-actually-shipping software that I'm aware was doing this was
the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, and they've promised to stop doing that some
day. =\

Thanks for the heads up. I did a search on my own system for the codecs and
came up with nothing, hence my remark to the OP..
