I have a W2K active directory established on a small
library network. The network has 1 W2K server, 2 Win 98
machines, and 13 WinXP Pro machines. The XP machines are
public use machines, so I have created a "public" account
for them and created a group policy in Active Directoy
that prevents users from installing software, changing
the homepage, accessing the Windows folder, etc. It
works just fine, except for 2 of the XP machines. They
seem to be ignoring the policy. They are on the domain,
with the correct user account, and a few of the settings
(such as installing new software) are in effect, but
others (such as hiding the Run Menu, hiding the Windows
folder, etc.) are not being enforced. Any ideas on what
is going on and how I can remedy this situation? Any and
all help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello.

1) Make sure DNS is correct setup on threes two computers. (This means that
DNS point to one of your Domain Controllers with DNS installed and you
should ping the domain name by FQDN like ping company.local and got
response)

2) Run the command line tool gpresult , included in Windows XP to se how
Group Policies applies

3) If you have changed the permission (ACL) for the particular GPO make sure
The computer have at least Read and Apply Policy permission as well as the
particular user account.

That seems to have worked. The DNS on the machines was
set to an ISP DNS address under one of the administrative
accounts. Pointed it to the PDC, and it worked
wonderfully! I should have known to check that
first....not sure what I was thinking! Thank you for your
help and suggestions.
