I've read all the posts regarding this dreadful combination. I'm not
even able to get my computer to recognize the scanner. Could someone
PLEASE help?! I know little concerning drivers, so please be basic.

This is the link to the Polaroid software download for the sprintscan 35
plus.
http://www.polaroid.com/service/software/sprintscan/ss35plus.html

I do not see a XP compatible driver.

Which means the you will not be able to use the sprintscan on an XP
computer.
What you should do, is have a second computer that runs Windows 98 Second
Edition to use with the scanner or you can have a dual boot system with XP
and Windows 98SE.

Two computers can be connected so that files can be transfered between
computers.

The Polaroid Sprintscan 35 Plus is the same scanner as the Microtek 35t Plus
which I have (don't ask) and it runs just fine on my Win2k system. I do use
Vuescan for my scanning as I like it better than the Microtek Scanwizard.

Try loading Win2k drivers for the Microptek 35t plus and see if this works
assuming you are using either Win2k or Win XP. It should work.

Hope this helps.

I have not seen the posts, but if it is a SCSI scanner, probably you
need to install ASPI, from
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/drivers_by_product.jsp?sess=no&
language=English+US&cat=%2FProduct%2FASPI-4.70&prodkey=ASPI-4.70

ASPI allows the scanner driver to see the SCSI scanner.

Or VueScan should work with it, trial from www.hamrick.com
(but you will still need ASPI and a working SCSI driver)

I think that is not going to work. It is the same scanner, but the firmware
ROM contains Polaroid ID instead of Microtek ID, so it wont be recognized
by the Microtek software as a Microtek scanner.

I've downloaded VueScan...have installed ASPI. These were all the
things I tried prior to posting. I'm still not able to get my
computer to recognize the scanner.

I might try the dual-boot system; does anyone know a good resource to
walk me through this? Also, is there a convenient way of swapping
information between the two without external media?

In a dual boot system, if the file system is compatible with both OS's then
either OS can read any partition on the hard drive.

If the file system is Fat32 then Win98 and Me can read any file on the hard
drive. If the file system is NTFS then Win98 and Me can not read the hard
disk.

Dual Boot is good, I use it here. You have at least two disk partitions,
with Win98 on C: and WinXP on D:. The issues are that Win9x can only be
on disk partition C:, and must be there first. Then one simply installs XP
on a different disk partition, and you can boot into either. If you have
already put XP on partition C:, then you can only reformat and start all
over, Win9x first on C:. Not sure what you mean by swapping information,
but it is simply two disk partitions on the one computer, so you can simply
copy files directly from partition C: to partition D:, or vice versa. But
if you mean retaining installed status, probably not.

You have not mentioned your SCSI board and driver, but it must work too,
with good status in the Device Manager.

I have a screen capture from the Polaroid support site that says that that
scanner will not work on XP. Their advice is to get Vuescan from
www.hamrick.com and run the scanner that way.

As I stated earlier, I use Vuescan to run my Microtek 35t and like it much
better than the supplied software. By the way, Vuescan doesn't use Twain.

Also, have you checked that the switch on the back of your scanner is set
correctly? I know that this may seem obvious, but I've screwed it up in the
past when rushing setup. Switch sets the SCSI number that the scanner shows
up as. i.e. if the SCSI card is looking for the scanner to be on number 3
and the switch is set for 5, the computer won't find it.

Wayne is the resident scanner guru and I certainly bow to his superior
knowledge with this and all scanners.

Hope this helps,
Dave

Yes, you need ASPI installed. Unlike previous windows versions, XP
doesn't include ASPI by default. You have to install it yourself (used
to be you could download an XP specific version from Adaptec). I've the
Sprintscan 35 (non-plus although it has an alternate add-on name I've
forgotten). It works fine (such as it is) under XP. Used it for
many years. It's probably loading the win2k
drivers. Been too many years since I installed it to recall.

I use both vuescan as well as polaroid's software (mostly just the
twain driver) with it.

That said, I'm not too impressed with the quality I get (especially
noise in the dark areas) and is why
I've been looking into a Minolta 5400 (and trying to get 'approval'
for the purchase from she who must be obeyed). :-)

Still looking for the obvious things, but the SCSI scanner must be
powered on when the computer is booted. A SCSI scanner will not be seen
if the scanner is powered on later (unless you do a SCSI Refresh in the
Device Manager then).

I used to use a Sprintscan 35 under Mac OSX through a firewire to SCSI
converter. Like you, I started noticing noise in the shadows, it got lots
worse, to the point where it was not useable. I replaced it with a Minolta
5400 and have been very pleased with it. Prior to buying the 5400 I was
borrowing a Nikon LS4000ED for a weekend at a time to catch up on scanning,
nice but out of my price range.

Finally was able to get the computer to recognize the scanner. The
switch on the back that indicates the device number was on 4; I
changed it to 1 and everything worked.

Have been playing with Vuescan; the thing will not scan right. Don't
know what the problem is. There's one line where the thing scans
right, but the rest of the scan is either black or seemingly random
colored boxes! I was thinking about trying a new lamp, but this was
just a guess. Has anyone had this problem? Anyone know how to fix
it?

FWIW, I use a Sprintscan 35 Plus with XP. And it works just as well --
or just as badly -- as it did with Win2k or Win98. When I first got
the Sprintscan, it worked fine, but for the past several years, I've
been getting repeated calibration errors when I first try to scan a
slide. Once I get past that (I usually have to hit the preview button
5 to 15 times before it works), the scanner works fine. I use the
Polaroid software (whatever the latest version is.) Upgrading my OS
from Win98 to Win2k and then XP has made no difference.

I do have to refresh hardware (in device manager) several times,
though, to get the scanner recognized under XP.

I don't know if your new scanning problem is Vuescan or the scanner,
but there should be an extra bulb inside the scanner that you can try.
I don't remember exactly where it is, but it's tucked inside the unit
someplace.

I've been experimenting with VueScan, which I like because I do NOT
get the calibration errors. I can't figure out how VueScan works --
but that's a topic for another thread!

I don't know if you managed to have your scanner working ok... so here
goes an answer:
The random colored boxes are probably due to communication problems
between the scanner and your PC. Check to see if the cables are seated
properly, and *double check* if your scanner needs a SCSI terminator.
The SS35 manual says some of the versions require one.

Good luck!
