Pointer lags behing mouse movement

I apologize for leaving out my email address in original
posting.
I've been using XP Pro for 6 months and use a wireless
wheelmouse. Recently my cursor(pointer) has begun
lagging considerably behind mouse movement leading to
jumpy and sporadic cursor movement. What can I do to
eliminate problem?
 
Based on recent experience, I'd guess that the batter in the mouse is
wearing out. Try replacing the batteries.

Batter in mice ruins them almost every time! ;-)
