I'm developing an XPe platform for one of my clients that would be used in a
kiosk like environment. This platform would require three basic applications
to run on the machine. One of these applications is an older 16bit terminal
emulation style program. The client is not able to upgrade to a 32bit app
because the service they are accessing is also the develeper for the app.
The developer has not released a 32bit version.

My problem is what components need to be added to my image in order to
support the installation of 16bit applications.

Think "Bank Teller" and you'll be pretty close to the target platform. Most
of my clients in this particular market are in similar circumstances with
older Win98 based apps that must now be run on XP platforms because of
Patriot Act compliance issues with the OS. So telling these clients to
switch apps in addition to switching OS platforms is problematic at best.

Bottom line is, the client is pushing to keep their apps and I'm attempting
to accomidate their security requirements by migrating them from Win98 to
XPe.

I don't expect to have you good people solve this problem for me, but if you
point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ed

Ed,

If applications that you have can work on XP Professional then you are not
in trouble since you can add few components and you will be fine.
For start in XPe add component "Dos Windows on Windows Support" and let us
know if it help you.

But before you start wasting time on XPe for your sake try your applications
on XP Professional because if you can't make them to work there is very
little change that you will make them to work on XPe.

Thanks for the tip. We have done extensive testing for their apps on
standard WinXP Pro SP2 and have had a great deal of success. I was initially
reserved about looking at XPe for this solution until some market research
and working with some of my clients revealed that XPe would be a great
solution for this particular implimentation. I just downloaded and installed
the eval version of XPe yesterday and have really liked the whole process.

I have read the requirements for XPe and believe that this solution falls
well within the licensing restrictions. This makes the customer happy as it
reduces their hardware and licensing costs significantly.

I'll keep all advised.

Thanks again.

Ed.

Then there is no doubt that it will work on XPe SP2 :-) As long as you add
all required components to support your application dependencies and feature
requirements.
If you have problems just give us enough details so we can help you.

Good luck,

"Application Compatibility Core" component with all its dependencies may also be needed in this case.

Thanks for the update. I'll be rebuilding my image this afternoon with this
updated info. I'll keep posting updates.

Appreciate the advice.

Success!

We'll be taking this prototype over to the client tomorrow for testing but
the inhouse tests were completed with only minor issues.

My image is 301 meg plus the 70+ meg for the client apps. And now my next
step after onsite testing is getting the whole thing to run on a memory
stick. After that, locking the whole thing down using EWF. I've read all the
available postings concerning this process and will only ask for advice if
needed.

Thanks again Slobodan and KM.
