Since installing Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta1 on Saturday
July 30, I've been receiving a warning that a Trojan
(poebot.explorer) is trying to be set up on my system. Is
this a fault in the latest version of AntiSpyware (I
didn't have it before) or could I have picked it up
elsewhere?

Can you run a full, deep scan of your system?

This has sometimes been a false-positive in Microsoft Antispyware. Do you
have any batch or script files that run at startup on your system--even
empty ones?

It'd be good to do scans of your system in safe mode with both Microsoft
Antispyware and your updated antivirus application. If both come through
clean, it'd be good to try to work from there, perhaps using Microsoft
Antispyware System Explorers, or MSCONFIG, to see if you can figure out what
is creating these warnings at startup.

MSAS is in not fault, probably you get it before, especial
if you use AOL.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware and send a suspected spyware
report from the Tools Menu.

1) update both Microsoft Antispyware and your antivirus
application.
2) restart in safe mode by pressing the F8 function key
before the first Windows screen appears at startup.
3) do full deep scans with Microsoft Antispyware. Repeat
scanning until a complete scan comes through clean. Ditto
with the antivirus.

A good anti-trojan scanners are:

A-squared
Ewido
An are free.

And most importantly, when your problem is resolved, let
everyone know!!! Many people put a lot of time and effort
into helping. Let them know what suggestions worked.

Many thanks for your help. I actually ran XOFTSPY which
picked up 5 items (Trojans, etc) NOT identified by M/S
AntiSpyware and the problem has disappeared.

Interesting--sounds like the issue may have been real. In future, if you
want to help the Microsoft Antispyware team out, a Tools, Suspected Spyware
report can be helpful in this situation.
