Whenever I try and shut down Windows XP, a window opens up
called 'pnp notification receiver' and asks if I want to
end the program now or cancel. I have to choose end now in
order to shut XP down. I'e no idea what this program is,
presumably something to do with plug and play(pnp)

Its probably waiting for one of its dependant services to shut down before
it can shut down itself.

These services are

Logical Disk Manager
Logical Disk Manger Administrative Service
Messenger
Smart Card
Telephony (Which itself has whole host of dependencies including RAS which
is needed for ics and firewall)
Windows Audio

If you don't select cancel or end now, when it reaches the end of its
countdown period, you should get a message asking if you want to wait
another 20 seconds. Try this several times to see if it will eventually
shutdown by itself.

If it doesn't, go into the services snap in, and see what services are still
running, they will show status started.

start/run
services.msc

I have exactly the same problem - mine is related to a program I use
called mkwACT, which I use to compress/decrompress SHN files.

Sometimes after extended usage of this program (opening it, using it,
closing it a number of times) it will not start again properly - and
when I reboot I get the erorr message you mentioned.

If you got anywhere with this I'd appreciate it if you could post an
update!

Thanks,

Chris
