PNG Thumbnails do not display correctly in Windows Explorer

The thumbnails generated by Windows for my PNG files appear as "visual
noise". Does anybody know what the problem is, and if there is a way to fix
it?

If I open the PNG files with corrupted thumnbails in Irfanview 3.97 and
resave, Windows generates a good thumbnail. "MS PNG BUG" is listed as one
of the bug fixes in Irfanview 3.97.
