Plug Play Service

XPE

When XPE boots up, everything is great and I can click on
the start button and browse folders for about 30 seconds
and then the folders are unresponsive for about 2-3
minutes.

I found that if I turn off the Plug Play service this
pause for 2-3 minutes does not occur. Problem solved.

However, the new problem is Plug Play service must be
running at all times and cannot be disabled in order to
support USB devices. So how do I get rid of this 2-3
minute pause?

Another piece of information is that in Device Manager
there is a yellow exclamation point for an unknown device.

Thanks for your help.

Do you have a processor listed in device manager?

I have had builds that 'forgot' the processor causing
strange problems, especially with Via systems.

Howard

Thanks for your response Howard.

In the Device Manager under System Devices I have:
Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System

I also have under Unkown Device:
Other Devices.

BTW: The system works fine except for the 2-3 minute
pauses. How can a system work without a processor? Or did
I misunderstand your question?

Under device manager do you have an entry for processor?
Compare with a standard XP box. It will be listed under
the category of processor

Sorry I misunderstood initially.

However, I've checked and there is no Processor category
(no processor entry).
How do I remedy this situation?

Thanks.

Probably, you set your project based on TAP input. Then you probably got the
standard "Processor" component in your build.
Try switching to the component that reflects your real processor on the
target and see if it helps with the slow boot.

I do not have a VIA processor component. What is the
component name? Can you send this component to
(e-mail address removed)

Thanks.

There is no the processor component you're asking for.

Have you tried using "Inter PentiumIII Processor" component? (under
Hardware:Devices:Processors)

The original problem : 2-3 minutes of unresponsiveness
from XPE after boot if the Plug Play Service is running.

Tried the following:
Added only PIII Processor component - original problem
still exists.

Added only Processor component - original problem exists.

Added PIII Processor component and Processor component -
original problem exists.

Seems to me the problem is not related to the processor.
However, this did clear up the Unkown Hardware in device
manager.

Just a thought.

If you have network drivers installed, and DHCP enabled for obtaining
network addresses, but not DHCP server on network, then this can cause delay
of 30+ seconds.

This problem had to do with my touch screen component.
After removing this component the image no longer had this
behavior.
