Plug 'n' Play Monitor Problem: Need Help!

I've got a KDS Visual Sensations somethin'-ruther that is plug 'n' play.

I updated the monitor driver via Windows Update. Now I believe that this
driver was specifically for the monitor, not for the graphics card, as it
used the monitor's nomenclature.

I moved around an old box and just tried to boot it up connected to this
monitor, but the old box wasn't the one that downloaded the Windows Update
for that monitor. When I boot it up, the monitor just says that I need to
check the cable or the computer. (I don't even get the DOS-type boot
screen.) I checked the cable to make sure it was firmly connected. Nothing.
I am now using the newer box on that same monitor to type out this query.
The last time I used the old box with this monitor the monitor driver had
not been updated.

Could the problem be that I didn't download the monitor driver/update for
the old box, and if so, how the heck am I supposed to download or install it
for the old box if I can't see Windows, the Desktop, I.E., etc.?

Does the monitor driver reside in the monitor or in the computer?

I tried reseating the graphics card and that didn't work.

The message that I need to check my cable or computer sits there bouncing
around, blinks out for a split-second at the point where the DOS-like
environment should kick up on the screen, then comes back and continues
bouncing.

I tried another graphics card, too.

Same result.

I'm bumming.

That's not likely to be the problem. Sounds more like your old box is no longer working.

In the computer.

Does the box show any sign of life at all?
Any "beeps"?

Probably not the graphics card, then.

I'm assuming the box is showing some signs of life.
Turn it off, disconnect it from the mains and pull every card out except the graphics card. Pull out all the memory, except one
stick.
Unplug the ide cables and the power to the hard drives, CD Burners etc.

While you're in there, give any fans you can see a spin, to check that they rotate freely.

Then turn it on and see if that helps.
If it does, power the box off, put one thing back in, and try it again.
Keep doing that until it fails again (in which case you've found the culprit) or it's all back together and working ;o)

Hope this helps.
