Does this portable drive get its power off the USB ports also?

Download speed -- download from the Internet?? If yes, how do you
connect to the Internet? If you are using a USB high speed access,
then you need to know that the portable hard drive is consuming more
power over the USB ports so the USB port used for the Internet also
has less power. It is perfectly normal that this occurs and USB is
working as per design.

yes the usb high speed ports supply power. I amusing a speed streem modem dsl
connect

Several SpeedSream models have Ethernet (RJ-45) and USB connectors.
Can you determine which connection yours is using?

You might consider getting a powered USB hub and connect the portable
drive to this. Powered hubs provide additional power to USB devices
and can help with this type of "power" issues (maybe.)
