Hi,
By error I removed the letter D from a HD and when I tried to put it back,
the system requires the HD to be formatted. Because I have many pictures in
it, I need to recover them so I cannot format it. Can anyone, please suggest
how to go by?
TIA

Boot the system with a Linux Live CD (Knoppix, Ubuntu) and copy the data on
the drive to an external hard drive. Then format the drive from within
Windows. Copy the data back to the drive.

Ray,
I have used TestDisk6.8, a year or so ago, to accomplish something similar
to what you are requesting. This program worked for me on both XP Home & Pro
32-bit, and external HDDs attached to these systems. I do not know if it
will work for XP Pro 64-bit or Vista systems:

Read all the information on the following website, and instructions for the
program in the links associated with this website before attempting
anything.

Maybe 2 diffrent ways to go for that,1st,open device mgr,if other hardware
is now D:,like youre cdrom or similiar, locate the hardware in device mgr,
expand the tree,R.click on the hardware,select "disable",once thru,exit,exit
xp & shutdown pc.At this point,replug in the old D: hd,start pc.Once in xp,
go to run,type: diskmgmt.msc In msc,L.click on the hd,go to actions,change
drive path/letter,try setting to D: if its available,or change path,in the
space
type: WUTemp close, exit msc,see if you can access the files.

Hi Ray,

You should be able to go back to Disk Management and reverse the steps that
removed the letter.

Click Start
Click: Run
Enter following line and press Enter key:
diskmgmt.msc

Right-click the drive volume (partition) in the list
Click: Change drive letter and paths
Click: Change (button)
Click: Assign the following drive letter
Select an unassigned letter
Click: OK
Click: OK

You're welcome. --Richard
