Windows XP will not recognise this unit and I am told that
the only way this can happen is to format the HDD and
reinstall - and reactivate - the OS. Any comments please.

Well, whoever gave that suggestion was doing some good drugs. Why would a
wipe/reinstall fix something like this when all you are really doing is
detecting the same drive in the same way when you do that. You might end up
with an overall cleaner and better running system, though. heh

I suppose you have tried these:

And then contacted Plextor Technical Support, so they might walk you through
any deletions in the registry, etc:

Thanks Sharon. Thanks for your help. Unfortunately I've
been through those and a few more. Even downloaded ALL XP
updates in the hope there was a bug fix. I've tried all
the IDE configs - pri slave /sec master, sec slave - it
doesn't appear at all in sec slave. Flashed BIOS on Abit
IC7-G, and spent hours on the Abit support site. Still
nothing.
Thanks again for your help. Any more ideas appreciated.

Hi,
There's an update at Ms for the XP CD built-in Burning app.
"Well, it gave me real fits".
Same thing happened after it got installed and this on 2 different PCs w.
different CD/DVD Burners.
Lost them both.

Could it be..?
