ok, here it is--when i start up everything seems to go smoothly, but after the screen that says "starting" it just goes to the picture that i have on my desktop without any icons, start menu, and so on. I can click cntrl/alt/delete and run programs through task manager by clicking "new task" and typing "desktop," which will bring up my desktop items in a folder menu/screen, but it doesn't help the dektop issue. Oh, also, when i go to logoff, just before it goes off the desktop picture and into the "windows is shutting down screen," i can see my desktop icons and such the way they're supposed to be, but only for a second. I've already ran the repair/reinstalation from my XP CD, and it worked at first, but then it went right back to this clusterfrag. PLEASE! any assitance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi,
I have seen that happen when explorer.exe fails to start. When it happens
check task manager to see it explorer.exe is listed as running.

Did you install any software before the last time you loged off ?

Were you able to get your problem resolved? If so, how
did you do it? I am having the same problem and can't get
it fixed from the other posts you received.

Apparently, it is due to a damaged Windows Explorer (explorer.exe). To
rectify the fault, Explorer needs to be replaced. If turning off the .exe
file and turning it back on does not work, a new copy needs to be taken from
the i386 folder. For details, please read MVP Kelly Theriot's reply to an
inquiry similar to the one presented here:

This doesn't explain why the malfunction returned after an initial normal
execution, following a "repair/reinstallation from ... XP CD" -- I assume
this is repair/reinstall of WinXP, not explorer.exe. For investigation of
this malady, I would suggest, in the first instance, a scan for virii and
other contagions. A Check Disk and a System File Check would also be in
order.

Good luck.

Bee.

Try changing your screen resolution on your desktop (right click,
Properties) - to larger or smaller to see if that helps. Your desktop
screen image may be stretched so that your icons are there, but hiding
"off screen".
