There was two Xp computers in my house, which were rather easy to network in
order to share files and a printer, but it doesn't seem to be so easy, now
that I've upgraded my lap top to Windows Vista Home Premium. Can someone
walk me through the steps, mainly to share the printer, and then the files on
the computers? Thanks alot, because I'm having a hard time figuring out how
to do it on my own.

First , understand that /you/ are not the problem. Unfortunately, lots of
normal Vista users will have to learn a lot more about networking than they
want to or should have to know, especially until third-party network device
manufacturers make more completely Vista compatible devices (it is unlikely
that Vista's "backwards compatibility", a misnomer in this case, will be
made any better). However, as a starting point, see

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/76174f4a-7522-425a-9424-324dd299265e1033.mspx

If this doesn't work, please report back here with more details about your
configuration and the problems you are having.

David -
I'm having the same problems - 2 computers (IBM PC & Dell Laptop) running XP
and happily sharing files and a printer. I have a new Toshiba laptop running
Vista Home Premium. I had no problem connecting the Toshiba to the wireless
network as far as using the Internet but just can't seem to get the hang of
file/printer sharing. I've tried the link you provided and still am running
into a brick wall. With XP all I needed was the workgroup and, bingo! file
sharing was a snap. Where do I go from here?
Thanks, Merrie

Tell us exactly what you're doing, how the machines are set up, and what
messages or other problematic displays you're getting. Details will help.

Thanks for helping. I went to the link you provided above and it led me to
an MS netwoking setup site. My home network works perfectly as is -- the
printer is shared, Internet is shared, and my XP and Vista can SEE each
other on the network. The ONLY problem I (and a zillion other Vista users)
have is how to convince Vista to share a particular folder! My XP can "see"
the "shared" folders on Vista and can even access the "Public" folder.
However, the XP cannot ACCESS the "shared" Vista folders identified as such.
Permission denied!

The solution should be fairly simple. I've been sharing files for years
among XP and ME systems with no problems. Along comes Vista, and no-go. I
will solve this some day when I really have lots of time.

If you've changed the shared access permissions for the folder, removing the
Everyone group and allowing only Administrators, I had a similar problem.
Jimmy Brush supplied the solution here in this forum on 6/5/07:

"This is caused by Windows Vista ignoring your membership in the local
'Administrators' group when accessing it remotely (not through remote
desktop).

"To get this to work correctly with your administrator group membership,
you need to change this key on your vista box:

"Location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\system\

"Create a DWORD Value called: LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy

"With the value: 1"

That's all I can think of without more information about your configuration.

Thanks, David. I'll work with your suggestion and see where it goes.
Appreciate your input.
