Please recommend a free, easy and _fast_ picture viewing application
for Windows Vista. It should be small in size. It should show
thumbnails of images in a directory and allow opening them quickly. By
free I mean free as in free beer, but free as in free speech would be
even better.

I deal with a lot of images in my work, and I love using this as the default
viewer:

http://faststone.org/FSMaxViewDetail.htm

It does not have the directory view that you want though. They have another
free program on their website that can do that, but I have not used it (I do
not like the skinned interface in the screenshot), and I use Adobe Bridge or
Adobe Lightroom when I need to look at many pictures at the same time.

I use gwenview.

Thank you for your suggestions.

I tried out FastStone Image Viewer, IrfanView and FastPictureViewer.

Is it possible to configure IrfanView Thumbnails and FastPictureViewer
to automatically show the opened image in full screen?

The X (Close) button in the upper right corner in FastStone Image
Viewer doesn't seem to reach the ultimate corner of the screen where
you can take your mouse pointer, even if you have maximized the
application. Clicking that corner doesn't close FastStone Image Viewer.
