im a bit of a novice at this but my pc isnt reading any cd/cd roms tried uninstalling and installing the dvd drive but it keeps saying that the drive is working ok but it is not recgonising it any help would be apprceiated

There are a few more questions we need answers to to solve this one.

??? Does Windows recognize the actual drive (does it show up under 'My Computer')?

??? Have you tried different media (try cd-rom, audio cd, dvd - will it recognise any kind of disc or none)?

??? How old is the drive?

??? Have you made any recent changes (hardware or software) to your computer?

??? Has it ever worked correctly, and has the problem started all of a sudden?

If you can answer those for us, we will be able to diagnose further. My initial thought is that if it is not a new drive, and Windows can see the drive and simply not read discs is that it's knackered - so you might have to just buy a new one (they're cheap enough nowadays anyway.)

when you go into my computer and click on the dvd /cd drive the next page is blank, the drive is only 5 months old and has been working fine what i omitted to mention is that my moniter went pop about 2 weeks ago and i replaced it 3 days ago thats when i discovered that no cds,cd roms and dvd s would play.when i go into device driver it shows up as atapi dvd dd 2 x 16 x 4 x 16 not any manifacturers details. thanks for your response as you can tell im new to this!!! thanks

What do you mean your moniter went pop - did it blow up and actually go 'pop', or did it just stop working? :)

Surmising the available data, I'd say the DVD-ROM drive is kaput.

Replacement cost - £15.00 max.

It is possible when the monitor went, er, 'pop' it caused a short which found it's way back to the main computer and knackered something.

Sad to say, it is possible that the monitor failure may have dealt a blow to the motherboard and the opitical drive in question may be OK.

I sincerely hope this is not the case.

First thing I'd do is replace DVD-ROM drive, try reading a disk, and if it can't be read, consider a new motherboard.

My home once got hit by lightning and it produced exactly the same fault.

Oh, and it took out the PCI bus as well.

the moniter crackled and "popped" and died !!
hmmm sounds good news thanks for your replies
