I do not have a dvd burner...however, I saved my video file (.wmv) on a CD-R.
I tried playing it in my DVD player, but received an error message.

I remember a friend of mine had saved a video on CD-R and I was able to play
it on my DVD player? Was this possible? Or would I have to invest in a DVD
burner in order to watch a video on my television?

Also, is there a way to edit the audio of a video clip without editing the
actual video footage? I try to select just the audio, but both tracks are
highlighted?

Thanks...

The WMV files on a CD are not playable in regular DVD players.... you need
to make a VCD or SVCD using other software than Movie Maker.

If you drag the video clip from the collection to the audio/music track of
the project, it'll put only the audio track there, and you can edit it
separately from the sound of the video.

Papa John,

Does the program unlead allow me to save the file as a VCD or SVCD? Also,
once I save the file as this type, can I still burn it to a CD-R?

Ulead makes lots of software... and their CD/DVD software will burn a
disc....

The VCD or SVCD is the disc you make, not a file type... MPEG-1 files are
used for VCDs and MPEG-2 for SVCDs.

The CD-R is a disc type... yes you can burn a VCD or SVCD onto a CD-R type
disc.

I currently have Ulead Video Studio 7 (basic) -
What is the difference in the disk I make and the disc I use?
What I mean is...when you say VCD or SVCD - are these disc types...just as
CD-R and DVD is a disc type? When I save a file...do I want to save it as
MPEG-1 or MPEG-2? or NTSC (whatever that is : )?

When you buy blank CD discs... that's when you get disc types like CD-R...
you get the type of disc that your CD burner info says to use. Those are the
blank discs that you use for VCD (Video CDs) or SVCDs (Super-Video CDs)...
the super ones are higher quality

I don't know your software, but assuming it'll burn a VCD or SVCD onto your
discs, you get to pick which one. SVCD is higher quality but the discs play
in fewer of the stand-alone DVD players.... make one of each and test them.

the ULead software takes care of it all.... give it the saved movie from
Movie Maker and use it to make the disc.

in Movie Maker, use either the DV-AVI option or a high quality WMV
choice.....

Papa John,

Thanks for all your help...I should be ready to go. One last
thing...promise... : )

when i do eventually get a dvd burner...i can simply save the video the same
way, right? and why do i always hear that i should save things in ntsc
format?

lastly, is there a way of editing the font type and color for titles in
movie maker?

believe it or not...this is coming from a girl who had no problem using
final cut pro...: )

Yes... the highest quality option when saving a movie is used whenever
you're heading toward a disc, VCD, SVCD or DVD.

The titling wizard of Movie Maker includes font type, color, background
color, font size and transparency level.

..... so it's just a little bitty learning curve for you.... :)

Hi again,

I just spent the past two hours converting the video file (.wmv) to an mpeg
and then burnt it to a CD-R and tried playing it in my DVD player but
received an error message?

I think Papajohn confused you a little.
Yes a VCD is a type 1 MPEG file but converting it to MPEG and burning it to
a disk will not work as the software that creates a VCD or SVCD for you does
more than burn a MPEG to a disk. It converts the video(s) to MPEG and then
changes them so that your DVD Player will recognize them. To create the VCD
or SVCD you need, as I think Papajohn said, a DVD Authoring program. Ulead
does have one, two very good ones in fact, but Video Studio 7 isn't one of
them. For a list of the more popular programs check out the "DVD Programs"
section of my website. If cost is the issue then know that many of them
offer free trial versions that work perfectly to create your VCD.
