hi
could someone please help a little
I have two win2000 boxes on a lan, and dialup connection from the first
machine
The dialup works, internet works, but I can't ping hostname either the first
or second machine
I can ping ip address on both machines, I use the 192.168.xxx.xxx address
space, is that private and okey?

how do I setup dns for two win2000 machines connected to isp over
dialup.thank you
Greger

Yes, that's the private address, it's what you should use.

You don't have your own DNS server - they should both use the DNS server for
your Internet connection (and on machine 2, it should be getting this via
DHCP, I believe - I don't use ICS)

Re name resolution - are both computers in the same workgroup? You may want
to create hosts file entries for each computer/IP on the other...

I tried with dhcp, but no workie,
the first machine has a modem with dynamic ip, and a network card with
192.168.1.1
the second has a networkcard with ip 192.168.1.2, simply
I can ping both machines with ip address but address resolution doesn't
work, i.e. I cant ping machines with their names.
what is wrong?
the second machine on the lan can't get access to the outside, do I have to
set up some router or gateway?
any help much appreciated.

I think there's a problem with your ICS setup then - from what I remember,
you have to use DHCP on the second machine.

The computer running ICS should be acting as the DHCP server and taking care
of this for you.

Hi Lanwench.

Actually you can't use DHCP with ICS, since ICS creates it;s own mini DHCP
service randomly dishing out IPs between 192.168.0.2 thrr 192.168.0.254.

:-)

Maybe if we knew how Bob Smith is pinging can give us some light on a
resolution, such as by single name (NetBIOS name) or FQDN. Maybe he can give
us examples while connected to his dialup and when not connected to dialup.
Also an ipconfig /all while connected and not connected could also help.
This way we can see his search suffix and what DNS is being used and the
binding order.

That's what I meant - I didn't phrase it very well, I see!
