‘Afternoon all,
I'm having some slight difficulties getting a particular
XP Pro laptop to recognize the network in his My Network
Places Explorer screen.
I have a Win2k Server with several XP Pro, Win2k and
Win98 boxes as workstations and, for the most part, things
are running smoothly. The problem I'm having right now is
that an XP Laptop cannot see the Network from his My
Network Places Explorer screen. None of the other
workstation icons appear in his right-hand panel.
He CAN \\computername from the URL window and get to a
particular workstation, and his box is recognized by all
the other machines on the network in THEIR respective
Network Neighborhood/My Network Places screens, but his
won’t see anyone else.
DHCP is set up properly on the Server (I believe) and
all the workstations are set to automatically obtain IPs
from it, including his. Leases are set to expire after a
week or so, so any resetting should have taken place many
times by now.
One thing I DO know is that he has a home network with
the same name as the one here at work (he’s the boss after
all) and at home he can see all the workstations
properly. I'm wondering if that’s where the problem
lies. He was having trouble with multiple connections
when he’d bring the laptop in from home and there were two
different domain names, and he solved this by renaming his
very small home network the same as our somewhat small
work one here (for argument’s sake, let’s call it
ABC.net). Actually, the problem didn’t even occur back
then, as for several days, he WAS able to browse our work
network properly (as well as his similarly-named home
one). At some point three weeks ago, however, the Work
Network just disappeared from his Explorer screen (though
home is still operating fine). I HAVE taken some Microsoft
Server updates in that time, and I wonder if any of THEM
could have changed something.
Any thoughts? Your help would be much appreciated and I
am a graphic Artist/Web developer who would be more than
happy to provide any help I can in my area of proficiency,
in return for yours here.
Thanks in advance,
~Art…

Make sure that laptop is joined to the domain (and not to the workgroup).
Check the ipconfig/all. It should show that everything is pointing to the
server-IP.
