Hello all,
please, if somebody could help me I would really apreciate it.

I have to confess that I know very little about networking, and only
definition of VPN.

I am working on website for one department in a university. If I want to
upload anything, I have to connect to VPN. Because I need to check the
website while I work on the files, I have to have access also to the
internet, therefore I had a file that our network guy wrote for me. When I
executed the .bat file, I was able to work on the VPN, and at the same time
I was able to browse the internet, get email etc. The file was:

route delete 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0
route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 default gateway metric 1
route add 10.0.0.0 mask 255.0.0.0 10.0.0.1 metric 1

This worked on my PC with WIN98. Now I got new PC with WIN XP and I am
behind Linkys router. Acording to the instructions of the network guy (who
is not there anymore), I have to use on WIN XP following .bat file:

route change 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 10.0.0.1 metric 2
route change 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 Default Gateway metric 1
route add 10.0.0.0 mask 255.255.255.240 10.0.0.1

Here is the problem. If I use first file I can access the internet, but I
cannot access the server on which I need to upload files.

If I use second bat file, I cannot access anything.

After use of both I have to disconect from LAN and connect again in order to
use internet normaly. I am behind Norton Internet Security, but I desabled
it for this.

Both *.bat files run and the dos window closes itself, so I cannot really
read any error message (on win 98 it stayed open). Is there any comand to
use so the window would stay open? I know that I can type it into prompt,
but it is very slow.
To find out default gateway, the guy says to use IPCONFIG. When I do so
there is nothing listed there. Therefore I use default gateway IP from the
Linksys routher setup (since it is the only one that I can find).

Please, if you have ANY idea what to do, please help me.

Thanks

Purmar

I don't really know the XP command of route, but it obviously that
something wrong with the 'route' command syntax or result.

You'd better to check if it is ok to run the .bat file in XP. Don't just
click the .bat file. You should run 'cmd', it will open a command line
interface(CLI), change the working directory to where your .bat file
resided, then run your .bat file to check it's execution process.

It's also very important to check your route table. run 'route print' in
CLI. There you may get lot's of information about your current route table.
