I am trying to establish a small home network between my
desktop and laptop, both running XP-Pro. My laptop is a
Dell C640 Lat. and my Desktop is a Compaq Presario.

I have DSL with a Linksys router.

I am having no problems using the internet but I can't
share files and/or printer. When I click on my network,
I can see all drives on both computers but I can't access
files.

On my Desktop, I can click on my "laptop c drive" and I
get only a Desktop.ini configuration settings file. But,
on my Laptop, I can click on my "desktop c drive" and I
get an error telling me the Network path was not found.

Now when I click on a folder or drive I get errors on
both machines!

I have even turned off/uninstall any firewalls while
troubleshooting. Then I made sure that all the folders
were shared with the appropriate permissions. I also
tried creating identical user accounts on both machines
and log on with that account but had no success.

Please help with this problem! If you could be so kind,
please email me with some help, Thanks!

Brian,

Asked here, answered here. For everybody's benefit.

Can you ping one computer from the other? By ip address at least?

From each computer, and post results here:
1) Ping the other by name.
2) Ping the other by ip address.
3) Ping itself by ip address.
4) Ping 127.0.0.1.

Please post ipconfig for each computer here. Start - Run -
"ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" - Open c:\ipconfig.txt from Notepad -
copy and paste here.

Cheers,
Chuck

Chuck,

First of all thank you for the reply!! I appreciate the
help...

Now, in my pinging testing, I was able to ping each
computer from each other by ip address. I could NOT ping
my laptop from the desktop by name nor could I ping the
desktop from the laptop by name. It told me host not
found. I could ping each computer itself by ip address.
When I checked the nic using the ping test I had no
problems as well.

ALSO, when I would run ipconfig, the prompt box would
open and then quickly close! I could not even find the
file it was to generate. May be part of my problems??

Again, thanks for your help on this!!

Brian,

No sweat on the help - that's what Usenet is for. I get far more than
I give.

Your saying "host not found" tells us one of two things. Either the
name resolver is not working or it is being blocked by a firewall.

From each computer, can you ping ITSELF by name?

What fireweall(s) did you un install? Zone Alarm for instance is
known for NOT clean / easy un installs - I have seen discussions where
somebody had to try several times before it was un installed and not
blocking browser / name resolver network traffic.

BTW, Is that your actual email address in From:? Learn to munge
properly.

Brian,

If your problem isn't firewall related, then I know where it lies.
See my three insertions in your ipconfig lists ( "#" above) then read
this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;160177

Somewhere else in Usenet is a reply from an expert who told how to fix
broken node type settings, which is where I originally got the article
link.

You need to know how to run the Registry Editor. Please do that, and
extract the value of NodeType in the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters
on both computers.

Any idea what computer should be using ip address 192.168.1.4?

Cheers,
Chuck

Chuck,

Well, I am getting a little lost here, I am not a pro but
just well enough to be dangerous... Anyway, Can you
email me at my email addy? (e-mail address removed)

I would like to be able to follow directly what you are
telling me to do.

By the way, I only have the XP Firewall. It must be the
Node type.

I'll read the article now.

Thanks!!!

Chuck,

I am not sure how to extract the value... can you email
how to do that? I also did a search for the article by
the tech and could not find it..

Thanks!

I have figured out my problems.... I had uninstalled
Panda Antivirus and there were some files still sitting
on the computer that enabled the firewall. I cleared
them all away in the reg and all is great now!!

Thanks for your help!!
