Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm running Windows ME
and after trouble shooting a previous problem with my
registry my internet connection now times out after 10
mins. I can reboot and go for another 10 minutes over and
over but it's consistent.

I use cable and router and have confirmed they are both
working fine by accessing the internet with my
laptop and it's only my ME desk system that this happens
to.
How it began:

It all started when I tried to install a stock ticker
program which didn't install fully and caused a registry
problem. In my infinite wisdom I decidede to retreated to
an earlier version of my registry which then caused an
AOL problem. I'm not sure whether or not the system timed
out at 10min at that time but I don't think it did. I
really wasn't on very long as I was just checking my AOL
connectivity. At that time I could however use the
internet but not AOL.

I uninstalled AOL and reinstalled it and it now worked;
well I could get in anyway. It was now that I was staying
on long enough to notice that after some time I couldn't
connect to the internet very long unless I restarted my
machine. Eventually I discovered I can connect for 10
min. only then I loose the connection.

I've called Dell and they have done a number of things
with me none of which worked. In fact they've created
some other minor problems. I'm convinced it's something
in my registry since this seems to be where the first
problem was and because the 10 min connection is
consistent.

I've tried all the suggestions I've found on line here to
fix or repair the winsock but to no avail.

Does anyone have any suggestions?????????

I hope so.

Any way I appreciate whatever you can do.

Rule out parasites.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit(s) is/are with
these tools.

Let AD-Aware Scan your system for advertising Spyware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com

If you use a HOSTS file, beware of this new issue.
Ad-Aware has decided to include a new detection when scanning the HOSTS
file. This now creates a "Bad hosts file entry" in the log file generated at
the end of a scan. The best thing to do is to place a check in each entry,
right-click and select: "Add selection to ignorelist". Otherwise if you let
AWW "fix" these items it will trash the HOSTS file! Even if you have it
"locked" by [example] SpywareBlaster or Winpatrol. It does not return the
attributes and renames the HOSTS file incorrectly to hosts.

and:

SpyBot-S&D

p.s Reset the 3rd party browser setting.

More: This may be caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware,
parasite).
Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.
