Subject: Surprise New User Account
From: "Birkonian"

I have just examined, via Control panel, User Accounts
and to my surprise I
now see I have a user account called ASP.NET which is
also password
protected. A Google search revealed that ASP = Active
Service Page.

Can anyone please tell me how this account got set up,
what's its purpose
and what is my best cause of action? BTW to the best of
my (XP limited)
knowledge I didn't set it up. (My system is protected by
NAV and Norton
Firewall). Thanks to those who respond to the Newsgroup
(my email address
is fictitious).

The ASPNET account is created when the .NET framework is installed, usually
via Windows Update. There are no known security issues with this to date,
so I would leave it be unless you decide to uninstall the framework. Not
very much currently uses the .NET framework yet, though that is likely to
change over time.

It sounds like you're new to this, so no criticism intended, but it isn't
sensible to repost a question you already see newly pending. If you look
you'll see that it was answered. Most newsreaders let you tag or flag a
post so you can look at it later to see the responses. You might want to
study that a bit..

regards.
