I have a brand new HP media centre PC so Im more than confident that I have
the necessary resources to to move files from my jvc digital video camera to
my pc. The problem: the computer does not recognize that I've plugged the
camera into the PC via S video cable. Instead, the software captures video
from tv cable that's connected to the computer as well. Can somebody help me?
I've been trying my darndest to find the answer on the net, but to no avail!

You'd be better of capturing it via the DV cable (aka firewire aka
ieee1394).
There's probably either a control panel item, or, if it's like my PC, you
have to reboot with the S-Video cable plugged in (strange, I know!).

But as I said, firewire is by far the best option.

Thanks Jamie,
The camera should still work with the s-vidoe cable no? Excuse my ignorance
as I'm new to all of this. How can I attempt to fix this via the control
panel? Thanks in advance.

Hmmm, this is odd. Did your PC not come with some sort of user guide? If
it's brand new, every PC I have seen also comes with some sort of support
line.
However, if you're having trouble getting through, I spent 19 seconds
Googling and got the following:
http://www.msusenet.com/archive/index.php/t-3322340.html
Could that be it? I know it's a different PC, but the line;

"Do you have your IR receiver and your IR blaster installed. MCE needs to
think it is controlling a STB to use the S-Video in."

[stb=set top box, but the article says you don't need it to use SV)

might be of interest.

Follow Jamie's advice. Forget about the s-video cable.
Get yourself an IEEE-1394 (FireWire/iLink) cable, and
you'll be able to import the actual DV stream to your
PC. (assuming your camcorder has that option)

To get Media Center to capture from s-video, you'd
first need to configure the TV signal to use a set-top
box (STB) connected via s-video. Then you could
disconnect the STB and connect your camcorder, and
perform a manual recording.

But the quality won't be nearly as good as if you
capture the DV via the firewire port. Plus your
video will be in DVR-MS format, which is less than
ideal for portability and compatibility with other
applications.
