ok! i have a dell inspiron laptop, a lexmark X83 printer/scanner and
have gotten with the times and went wireless with the laptop. LOVE
that! then, to make my life easier i decided to go wireless with the
printer. not so easy! got netgear and a techie friend has been trying
to help me and set it up but it seems that the printer for some reason
(USB??) isnt compatible with the netgear or all three things do not
communicate. can anyone offer a suggestion? other than buying a new
printer or opting out of the wireless printing... i really would
appreciate some help. THANK YOU!!!!

if the printer is installed correctly on one computer and it prints then:

Go to Control Panel and Printers & Faxes, and right click on the printer
icon and go to the SHARING option on that menu
Share it on the network. windows Might ask you to enable simple file and
printer
sharing or ask you to JUST ENABLE FILE SHARING say YES.

Now next step is to ADD the printer from the laptop.
I am assuming that the laptop has XP also.
If not you will have to tell me.

Go to the laptop and again Control Panel and Printers & Faxes.
There will be an ADD PRINTER icon on the task pane on the left under
printer tasks. Press that and a wizard will start.

There you will select A NETWORK PRINTER option and then
BROWSE For a printer. The Desktop computer and the printer should be on at
this moment. Next you will see a small window that says microsoft windows
network and then mshome or workroup.. each icon there you will double click
until you see the printer icon. you will add that...

after some steps it will add the driver and ask you if you want it default,
you will say yes, and then it will print a test page.

Tell me if this information helps you... and please out of curiosity come
back and post what happened and if it was successful.

If you have the Lexmark connected to one of the computers, then follow the
instructions posted by John Jay Smith.

If you do not have the Lexmark connected to one of the computers, you have
to have a Print Server.
Did you purchase and install the Lexmark N4050e 802.11g Wireless Print
Server?
Did you purchase another brand of Print Server?

Read the instructions that came with the Print Server to learn how to
configure the Print Server.
Read the instructions that came with your Lexmark to learn how to configure
it as a networked printer.

If the printer is one of those combo printer/scanner/card reader machines
you probably won't get it to work, been there done that.
It has to be a printer only. (they do have some new stuff out that might
help but I forget what they are calling it)

i appreciate all the replies to my problem but.....let me clarify- i
have one dell laptop one 'all in one' printer (scan/print/copy/fax) one
DSL router and one 'netgear' router. i have no desktop computer. the
dsl and laptop are great! no problems. the netgear router and my
printer (lexmark x83) dont like each other very much. the printer is
not communicating with the router OR my laptop. was told by tech
support that b/c its a USB its not compatible??? im asking if there is
some alternative to make them compatible. maybe additional
software/harware? i like my printer and dont want to buy a plain
printer to go wireless. anyone? again, thank you-

I do understand -- you are trying to network your laptop with your printer
via a wireless Ethernet connection.
You can not do that unless you have a print server between your router and
your printer.
Unless your printer has a built-in print server, you have to purchase a
print server.

Note: Unless your printer is specifically designed to connect to a print
server (or has a built-in print server), features such as scan/copy/fax
probably will not work. Printing may, or may not, work.

If the manual for your Lexmark multi-function does not specifically state
that it is capable of being netowrked, it probably is not. The only way to
determine for certain is to call Lexmark and ask them directly. There is no
point in purchasing a print server if your Lexmark multi-function printer
does not support network connections.

The "all in ones" are not compatable with print servers.
google it.
