I am on a different compuer than the one with the error...
I am trying to fix a Dell Latitude Notebook
It had Windows 2000 on it and I was told by Dell to Put Windows XP on it... So I start downloading XP Home Edition and its copying the files and at about 54% an error message on a black screen comes up that says
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy ofthe above file
When you press a button the computer restarts.
Now another black screen comes up that says
Please select the operating system to start:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
For troubleshooting and advanced startup options for Windows, press F8
Now if you choose and operating system this black screen comes up again
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy ofthe above file
So i press a button and the computer starts up again and this time I press F8 and this black screen comes up
Windows Advanced Options Menu
Please select an option:
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA Mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure
Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices
I choose either of those options and it goes back to the screen that gives you Both operating systems.. and when you choose one again it brings you to the screen with the error message...
I hope someone can help me... Would be much appreciated
