I bought my PC from Dell !!! with windows xp media ! I have not been able to
find any word processing thing except microsoft works !
I have already purchased word 2000 (but cant find disk but have authentic
key thing) I have downloaded and used 2007 (and written several assignments
using it) and i am now unable to open them or edit them !!! I dont want to
waste all my work ! so the questions are - how do I find a wordprocessing
thing on windows xp
- how do i get my documents written in word 2007 - how do i get a cd for the
word 2000 ??????????????? Thanks to anyone that can help x

Your most economical solution is to purchase a Word CD from eBay. Or, if
you know someone who has Word 2000 is to burn a copy. But! Even if you get
Word 2000 you probably won't be able to open any files created with Word
2007.

A bit cumbersome solution would be get a copy of 2000 from eBay; have a
friend open and save your 2007 files as 2000 files for you.

1. There is no word processing program included in the XP operating system.

2. Your computer from Dell came preinstalled with MS Works. If you don't
want to use the Works word processor, you must install a different word
processor.

3. Word 2000 is old, but see this link for replacing missing or broken
MS software:

How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;326246

4. You probably downloaded a trial version of Word 2007. In order to use
Word 2007, you would need to buy it. Refer to the website where you
downloaded the trial to see how to purchase it or uninstall it and
purchase it locally or use something else. As a student, you should also
check with your school to see if they have discounted software you can buy.

5. OpenOffice is a free office suite if you cannot afford or do not wish
to purchase a word processor. Get it from www.openoffice.org.

And as a student you would appear to qualify for a reduced cost version of
Office2007 ie Student & Teachers, available from your favorite online store
or Amazon.com

By purchasing and installing one, if the Works word processor you
already have doesn't meet your needs.

Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any of its
individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
Outlook, etc.), have _ever_ been "part" of *any* Windows operating
system. They are, and always have been, separate applications, that
must be purchased and installed separately.

Purchase a license for Word 2007 so you can upgrade that time-bombed
evaluation copy you've been using.

word 2000 ???????????????

Try eBay or a used software shop; Word 2000 has been out of production
for years, now. (And it may not open files created with Word 2007, anyway.)

Unfortunately, Dell computers come preloaded with all manner of junkware, and
as you've amply illustrated it causes problems for end-uers.

Your other option is to download Open Office, which does the job perfectly
well for general document-writing, and costs nothing. When saving, just make
sure to save in .RTF ot .DOC format, not Open Office's bespoke format which
no-one else (well, no MS-Office user, anyway) will understand.

Only criticism of Open Office is that it's rather bloated and slow. (Yes,
more so that Microsoft products..) You need a really powerful PC to get a
satisfying responsiveness out of it.

If you just want a small, fast wordprocessor, there's also Abiword.

I would dispute that - comparing Open Office 2.2 and Office 2003, the speed
differential is almost non-existent...

Contrary to the information in the previous replies to your post, the simple
word processing program WordPad is built into Windows XP. Find it in 'All
Programs' -> 'Accessories' -> 'WordPad'.

WordPad will open Word for Windows documents and you can edit the contents
but it creates .rtf documents and does not have the power of Word and does
not have a spell checker. This is the quickest solution, since it is a part
of Windows XP. When you have more time you can explore ways of purchasing
Word 2000, 2003, or 2007 (any one of which will likely be suitable.)

But NOT Word 2007 DEFAULT .docx documents - IF the OP saved them as Word
97-2003 type documents then yes.
I suspect the former.....

Have you considered <Open Office>? Latest release is 2.2 and is free!
It can read all word documents and save in word format. Also has an
autocorrecting spell facility.

And THAT won't open default Word 2007 documents either.....

I do not think I like microsoft at all. OK - I use their products when
there is no choice; I do not not not not like their money grabbing
expensive schemes.

I would suggest to the OP that she copies the files to an USB stick, finds
a colleague running word 2007, and resaves them in a format that she can
read on her machine. Surely there must be a degree of backward
compatability in word 2007 for just such an instance. If not - this, sad
to say is not untypical of the microsoft approach - give me more money.

There is - but you have to either do a "Save As" or install the Office 2007
viewers in previous versions of Office...

There is a 'Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack' download at
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...roductID=D0DEF809-85C0-4BB8-8838-92D423AADCEE>
that allows Office 2000 and later components to open, edit and save Office
2007 documents.
