Here's the deal: myd hd started making screeching noises this morning.
It will boot only to windows 2000 safe command mode prompt. From there I can
access all HD and files look OK.

whew!

....but

Unfortunately I can't load Explorer and safe mode has no network support. I'd
burn all valuable data but Nero keeps asking for serial which I give to no avail.
I'd rather send the files down to network but how do I enable network support
when in safe mode?

I think I've lost boot loader but can still boot from disk.

What are my options? I have a couple of computer in working order. Could I down
load a demo of a cd burner (other than Nero) somewhere? I've tried HP DVD writer
but it does not work in safe mode.

Please someone help. I won't shut down my computer. I've shut it down a couple of
times but after that even safe mode started having problems.

I don't know, but K3b will burn DVD's under Knoppix-3.7.

To the OP.
Download and burn a copy of the Knoppix 3.7 LiveCD. Boot your
system with it and (after quite a long boot process), use K3b to
burn your stuff onto CD or DVD.

Just thought I better add that the LiveCD is a 699MB download and
you'll find K3b from start menu | multimedia.

Well if windows is hosed you can't load drivers for most
things, what storage can you access? How much data do you
need to backup? Can you just pop a thumbdrive into the USB
socket, have it appear as a drive letter and copy to it or
no?

Ideally, keep drive spinning... do not turn off system, not
disconnecting power from drive.

Unplug data cable from drive. If PATA, connect drive it to
a USB enclosure (board, interface), still powered from
original system, then plug that (USB) into another system to
copy off data.

If you dont' have an external enclosure then you could try
connecting to the other system's PATA controller, THEN
turning on the other system (leaving problem system turned
on).

Then again, letting the drive spin-down by cutting power to
it might not be problematic. The best alternative, IMO, is
leaving it spinning but cutting power, pulling drive and
putting it in the other system might work too, providing
that other system/OS supports the drive's current file
system.

Is there any way to start network support com safe mode?
presently I'm using a usb stick but it's slow.

My Window 2000 Advanced Boot Options menu (F8 during startup) includes a
"Safe Mode with Networking" item. I've notice the same option in my
machine that is running Windows XP Professional.

What operating system are you running?

If the hard drive is making noise, I would strongly suggest to back up all
your valuable files, go out and buy a new drive, install it, and then
re-install everything.

If you put a new HDD you better use GHost or similar product to clone the
disk.
No need to reinstall
