Please Help pc wont boot

Hi,

I recently built my own pc (parts listed below) all worked fine except for
on occation when the pc booted I would get no signal to the monitor. Also
the pc would occationally lock up with a scambled picture on the monitor.

I assumed the problem was a faulty graphics card so I bought a second hand
one just to check this out(it was said to be a working ati radeon x300 pcie)
I tried the graphics card. the pc booted up but I got no picture.

Now when I try to boot up the pc (with either graphics card) it keeps
restarting. what I mean is it attempts to boot and after 2 seconds it cuts
out and starts again and keeps doing this until I turn it off.

I have stripped it back so that only the basics are connected to the
motherboard but I still get the same problem. I can only assume the
motherboard is faulty.

Any ideas or advice would be much appreciated

graphics card: Asus EN7600GS Silent PCI express (512mb DDR2)
hard drive: WD Caviar SE16 WD5000KS - hard drive - 500 GB - SATA-300

Motherboard or power supply. What kind of power supply are you
using ?

Have a look through the Newegg reviews, and see if there are
any matching symptoms:

470W Thermaltake TR2 PSU PC Power Supply Silent <19db

(I cant see any similar problems their)

I notice the power supply is switchable between 115VAC and 230VAC.
Is the switch in the correct position ? Be careful, and don't fiddle
with the switch while the computer is plugged in. A flipped
switch could cause restarts (230V switch position, 115V wall power).
(And if you set it to 115VAC and plugged to 230VAC, kabang.)

The first video card, could be a problem with GPU overheating.
I don't know what the deal would be with the second video card.
It could still be motherboard or PSU, and statistically PSU
has the highest failure rate. It could be some motherboard
regulation circuitry has a problem, which is preventing the
board from working well.

Can you run Prime95 (mersenne.org free download) and its
"Torture Test" ? That tests mainly the CPU and memory, and the
idea would be to draw as much power as possible with the CPU.
To see how many subsystems are affected. If everything on the
motherboard is having trouble, it is easier to believe in a
power problem. If only specific subsystems are having trouble,
it could be the motherboard (or the video card, as in your
video problems).

Unfortunately, it isn't always easy to isolate the problem
to just one piece of gear. Or get a clear picture of what is
going on.

Oh, another thing. Is the CPU heatsink sitting flat on the
top of the CPU ? Apparently there are some CPU sockets that
prevent the heatsink from seating properly. Was there a
click for each Intel retail heatsink fastener ?

Hi Mike,
Try removing all previous video drivers, reinstall Asus 7600GS
v.card with a Nvidia driver downloaded from the Nvidia site.
Ignore Asus video driver CD.

I'm using an Asus 7300GT with v.driver v93.71, on XP PRO.
